Arnold “Arne” M. Schroeder, age 74, of Carrington, ND, died Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at his home under the care of Presentation Hospice.
Arne was born on February 15, 1936, the son of Frank and Alice Schroeder in Carrington, ND. He grew up on the family farm near Bordulac and graduated from Carrington High School in 1954.
Arnold was united in marriage to Arlene Kollman on June 10, 1955. They made their home in Carrington, where he worked at Nicholson & Carr until he was drafted into the US Army in 1958. He spent a year in Fort Sill, OK, and a year in Germany with the Missile Artillery Group. He was again called to active duty in 1961, during the Berlin Crisis, serving a year as a filler on the Waterloo Iowa Air National Guard at Fort Riley, KS.
Arne returned home and continued to work at the Case dealership until the mid 1960’s. He accepted a job as assistant manager of the machinery dept. at Farmers Union Oil Co. In March of 1987, he took the position as manager of Rosenau Equipment Co. until his retirement in 1998.
He joined the Carrington Fire Dept. in 1970, where he served for 41 years, serving 12 years as Fire Chief. He was captain of the ambulance for several years when it was associated with the fire dept. Arne was a member of John Raymond O’Hara American Legion Post #25 and McCreary-Bonderud VFW Post # 3524, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Carrington. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping with his family and spending the winters with his snowbird friends in Mission, TX.
Arne will be remembered and deeply missed by his wife, Arlene; a son, Douglas Schroeder, Carrington; four daughters, Candice (Tom) Bronaugh, LeaAnn (Charles) Hoppe Jr., Sue (Dan) Rosenau, all of Carrington, and Judith (Ryan) Smith, Kindred, ND; thirteen grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; one sister, Lorraine Wells, LaCruces, NM; and one brother, Wilfred (Betty) Schroeder, Carrington.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, and four brothers-in-law.
