Betty Roaldson Dyrness, age 86, of New Rockford, ND died Thursday, April 28, 2011, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford, ND.
Betty Mae Carlson was born on May 17, 1924, on the family farm in Tiffany Township, near New Rockford, the daughter of John and Bertha (Nelson) Carlson. She grew up there and attended school at the Tiffany Township and New Rockford High School. In 1942, she married Merril Roaldson, with whom she had four children. They later divorced. On January 5, 1962, she married Edwin Dyrness in Carrington, ND. They had two children and farmed near Brantford until 1976. Ed died in 1992.
Over the years, Betty had worked at New Rockford Public School, Swift Poultry Processing Plant, Vivian’s Café, Red’s Super Value, Joe’s Fairway, New Rockford Senior Center and Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd.
Betty was a member of First Lutheran Church, Eagles Auxiliary and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary in New Rockford. Betty enjoyed time with her family and especially loved taking care of her grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook and spent lots of time baking, canning and sewing. She also loved gardening and raising flowers.
She is survived by two sons, Rodney (Jan) Roaldson, Courtenay, ND, and Dennis (Lynda) Roaldson, Jamestown, ND; four daughters, Barbara Munson, New Rockford, Marilyn (Steve) Nicholson, Carrington, ND, Lisa Schafer, Carrington, ND, and Lori (Randy) Lura, Carrington, ND; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, LaDonna Keller, New Rockford, ND, two brothers-in-law, Celester Risovi, Kenny Dyrness; three sisters-in-law, Gladys Carlson, Ellen Meier, Jane Zetter; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson Ethan Lura, one son-in-law, Kenny Munson; her parents, two brothers; Harry and Freddy Carlson; three sisters, Clara Bichler, Ellen Risovi and Nellie Anderson.
