Laura Harrum, age 91, of New Rockford, ND, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND.
Laura Louise Chapman was born August 31, 1918, to Marion and Marie (Schumacher) Chapman, in Powers County near American Falls, ID. The family moved to Turtle Lake, ND, in 1920, where Laura graduated from high school in 1936. She graduated from Minot Teachers College in 1941, with a two year certificate in elementary education. Laura taught for five years in rural schools in North Dakota, followed by one year in Wilton, then teaching for two years in Oroville, WA.
She was united in marriage to Lyman Harrum in Turtle Lake, ND, on September 8, 1946. They farmed near Sheyenne, ND, and she taught part time. Lyman died on June 27, 1969, Laura returned to full time teaching in New Rockford. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Mayville College in 1974, and retired in 1980, after 22 ½ years of teaching.
Laura loved teaching school very much, and taught piano lessons from the time she was in high school, teaching many neighborhood kids. She also loved to travel, after retiring she visited all 50 states, as well as several foreign countries.
She is survived by her son, Gordon (Diane) Harrum, Richmond, MN; her daughter, Nancy (Chuck) Ludwig, Brantford, ND; four grandchildren, Dave Ludwig, Dan Ludwig, Chris Harrum and Ellen Wolf; ten great grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Cook, Bothell, WA, Madelyne (Dean) Beierle, Bismarck, ND; and a brother, Carlyle Chapman, Depew, NY.
Laura was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one grandson, Andy Ludwig.
