Richard John Bush, age 86, of Fargo, ND, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at Merit Care Hospital in Fargo.
Richard was born September 24, 1923, in New Rockford, ND, to Herman and Emma (O’Connor) Bush. He grew up on the family farm, and attended country school at Munster Township School, rural New Rockford, and St. James Academy in New Rockford.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard on April 15, 1940. He served in the 164th Infantry, Company F, in the South Pacific and Guadalcanal during WWII, and was discharged on September 6, 1945. Following his discharge he worked in a gold mine at Cook City, MT, and then joined the Fargo Police Department on June 19, 1947. Richard was united in marriage with Gloria Knott on November 15, 1947, in Fargo. He retired on May 1, 1984, after serving for 37 years.
Richard and a fellow police officer had operated Northern Market, located on Main Avenue, Fargo, during the late 1950’s. He also enjoyed painting houses, doing woodworking, hunting and fishing. He was a member of VFW Post #762 & American Legion Post #2, Fargo, and was a life member of the Americal Division Veteran’s Association.
He is survived by his wife Gloria, Fargo; one son, John (Shelly), Fargo; three daughters, Karen Jo Bush, Fergus Falls, MN, Susan (Roger) Lee, Hillsboro, ND, Kathy Fermolye, Fargo; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elaine Atkins, Brooklyn Park, MN, Patricia (Roland) Dyrness, Burbank, CA, Darlene Jenrich, Farmington, MN; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Bush Rickel, New Rockford, Arlene Bush, Mesa, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ed and Glenn; and one sister, Ellen Allmaras.
