Richard McKay, age 70, of Fort Totten, ND, died Wednesday, September 14, 2011, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Richard was born October 22, 1940, at Fort Totten, ND, the son of Michael and Florence (Lohnes) McKay. He grew up in the Forth Totten area, and attended school at St. Michael Little Flower School. He graduated from high school in Flandreau, SD. In 1964, Richard entered the US Navy. Following his discharge, he moved to California where he worked. He met Anita Collins who became the mother of two of his children, Jason and Gina. Richard moved back to Fort Totten in 1970, and in 1973, became companion with Mildred “Millie” Sherman. They were united in marriage February 22, 1990. Richard worked at various jobs, including driving for Indian Health Service, until his retirement in 2001.
He is survived by his wife Millie; 6 children: Gina McKay, Schurz, Nevada, Lisa Burdick, Fort Totten, Jamie Burdick, Belcourt, ND, Laura Fournier, Crystal McKay and Ashley McKay, all Ft. Totten; 20 grandchildren; two brothers, Sylvester (Elaine) Albuquerque, New Mexico, Phillip (Phyllis) Warwick; two sisters, Viola McKay of Minnesota and Lois Ann McKay, Omaha, Nebraska.
Richard was preceded in death by one son, Jason; his parents; two brothers, Timothy and Melvin;
and two sisters Evangeline and Audrey.
