Donald Abell

Donald Lee Abell, age 48, of New Rockford, ND, died Thursday, September 21, 2017, unexpectedly at his home.

Donald was born January 3, 1969, in Superior, Wisconsin, the son of Robert and Margaret (Colbourne) Abell.  He grew up and attended school in Pingree and Carrington, ND.  At the age of 20, he attended technical business college in Colorado Springs, CO.  Donny traveled many places with his brother James, such as Oregon, Colorado, Florida, and finally settling down in Ohio.   He had moved to New Rockford in January 2015.

Donald married Loretta Funk in Xenia, Ohio, on July 4, 2003.  Loretta passed away shortly after the wedding.  Donny spent most of his time in Wilmington, Ohio, where he made many friends.  He was a fun-loving person who loved to make jokes.  Anyone who knew him would say he was a “jokester” and “so full of life”.  He especially loved being around his family, capturing every moment.  He was always so proud to show his family off - he loved his family.  Donny also enjoyed collecting things, fishing, camping and his guns.

He is survived by his mother Margaret Abell, Fergus Fall, MN; special friend Darlene Rittenhouse, Wilmington, Ohio; his son Chris Crandall, Pensacola, Florida, step-sons Mason (Tori) Funk and Billy Ballard, both of Wilmington, Ohio; step-daughter Tammy LeMaster, Xenia, Ohio; 3 sisters: Marge (Pat) McFadden, Fergus Falls, MN, Jean Colbourne and Mary (Mike) Prow, both of Bend, Oregon; 4 brothers: James Abell, New Rockford, George (Tammy) Abell, Pembina, ND, Robert Abell, Wahpeton, ND, Thomas Abell, San Francisco, CA; 6 step-grandchildren, 1 step-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.

Donny was preceded in death by his father, Robert Abell, his wife Loretta Funk Abell, his niece Jessie Danielson, and his nephew Michael Crawford.

Message: Sending my condolences to the family. I've known Donnie for some years now, I can remember as a young child Donnie sitting on my grandmother's porch cutting up about life. Just a few short months ago I had the pleasure of seeing Donnie again when he was here in Ohio visiting family and friends. I hate to hear this news because he was very special to my aunt (Darlene) I hadn't saw her smile in along time or even hear excitement in her own life until her night and shinning armor appeared. When she called me and told me the news my heart broke for her because I could hear the pain deep within. Donnie was very special to a lot of us... This last time I saw him he taught my kids some tricks with his chain, I swear they thought it was the coolest thing ever. His memories will forever stay close to us. May his beautiful soul rest easy. Until we meet again Donnie let them wings fly!
