Joseph "Joe" Anderson

Joseph “Joe” Anderson, age 91, of rural New Rockford, ND, died Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.

Joseph Ralph Anderson was born August 3, 1922, in New Rockford, the son of Siguard and Olga (Christ) Anderson.  He started school at Amenia, ND, later completing his education at New Rockford.

Following the death of his father when Joe was 11 years old, he and his mother and sister lived with an aunt and uncle, the Emil Christ family.  Joe helped on their farm until the age of 16 when he started to work for a farmer near Barlow, ND.  A few years later, he began farming on his own near Carrington, ND, later moving to a farm east of New Rockford which he purchased in 1946.

On November 27, 1954, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Cudworth at Jamestown, ND.  Joe lived and farmed near New Rockford until retiring, working side by side with his wife of nearly 60 years and his sons. His hard-working and gentle hands are a testimony of that dedication.

Joe taught by quiet example with never a cross word and instilled strong work ethics in his family.  He was a self-taught “jack of many trades” and was especially adept at many – as farmer, mechanic, electrician, plumber, carpenter, equipment operator, and musician.   He was able to pass on many of those same abilities to his sons.   He loved fishing, hunting, playing banjo, and motorcycling.

Joe was an active member of Kvernes Lutheran Church, CNDSTR, and Eagles Aerie 2923.   Over the years, he served on the church board, Munster Elevator board, ASCS committee, and Pleasant Prairie township board.  He was the recipient of the “Good Neighbor Award” in 1999, for his selfless, exemplary care and giving of his time and abilities for the good of others.

Those he leaves to mourn his passing include his wife Marjorie; two sons, Gary (Kathy) and David (Karen), both of New Rockford; two daughters, Shelley (Kent) Rigsby, Jamestown, ND, and Patti (Peter) Larson, Sheyenne, ND;   nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; four brothers-in-law, Edwin Peterson, Glenn (Judy) Cudworth and Douglas Cudworth, all of New Rockford, Clair (Becky) Cudworth, Bismarck; sister-in-law Marlys (Merle) Hanson, of CA; and several nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his only sister Sigrid Peterson, and two half-brothers, Palmer and Arnold Anderson.
