Marlys J. Berglund

Marlys J Berglund, 83, Fargo, ND, formerly of New Rockford, ND, died on Wednesday June 1, 2016, at her home surrounded by loved ones under hospice care.

Marlys J. Miller was born in New Rockford, ND, on September 28, 1932 to William and Anna Miller.  She grew up in New Rockford, ND. 

She married Virgil Berglund on December 1, 1954.  They raised their family in New Rockford.  Marlys and Virgil owned M&V Café, and everyone enjoyed her cooking. Marlys was also well known for her pastries, rolls, chocolate cake with caramel frosting, and wedding cakes.  While Virgil operated Sheyenne Sand and Gravel, while Marlys was a homemaker and worked for the New Rockford School District.  Later she and Virgil owned Berglund Jewelry.  Virgil often said “We went from big rocks to little rocks.”  Her favorite piece of jewelry was a necklace Virgil gave her which read “spoiled rotten”.

Marlys had many interests in life, one of which she enjoyed polka dancing with Virgil.  Later in life they enjoyed watching Polka Spotlight.  They enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their cabin on Red Willow Lake. She was an avid bowler and participated in league nights.  She and Virgil enjoyed their many  vacations to Florida.  Marlys was active in the community and served on the Board of the ARC for many years. She was president of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Eagles Club. 

Marlys  is survived by her children Lonnie Berglund, West Fargo, ND, Vicki Berglund,  Fargo, ND , Bill (Rhonda) Berglund, West Fargo, ND,  Sarah (Jason) Young, Benson, MN; Grandchildren, Amanda Haakenson, West Fargo, ND, Virgil Simonson, Seattle, WA, Sherilyn (Charlie) See, Huntington , WV, Amber (Matt) Petznick, Fargo, ND, Ryan Berglund, West Fargo, ND; Great-Grandchildren Madison Schmoll, Hannah Young, Katelyn Young, Jessica Young,  Presley Petznick, Parker Petznick, Bentley Berglund and Aiden See.  Sister Mernice Jacobson Grafton, ND.

She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil, 2 daughters, Paulette Pease and Sherry Simonson, Parents Anna and William Miller , Siblings Vivian Boe, Sylvia Miller (Tootsie), and Don Miller.

Message: My sincere condolences to your family on the loss of your mother and grandmother. I have fond memories of Marlys, Virgil, Paulette and Sherry. Your family always lived life well, through good times and challenges. I think about Marlys and remember her in church and behind the counter at the jewelry store! She always had a smile.  My mom always spoke fondly of Marlys!  May your memories of good times together console you during this sad time.

Message: Marlys was the last living member of the 3 Moms who founded the ARC in Valley City in the early 50's.  The other two were Margaret Grotberg and Sylvia Anderson.  Sylvia was my Mom, Andy Anderson my brother.  I even babysat Lonnie and Carol Grotberg back then.  Blessings to your family in memory of a wonderful lady, Marlys
