Gary E. Doeling

Gary Doeling, age 60, of Carrington, ND, passed away in his home of natural causes on Thursday, January 8, 2015.

Gary Edwin Doeling was born September 14, 1954, at Kensal, ND, to Edwin Louis and Dolores Ann (Pedersen) Doeling. He was raised on the family dairy farm, rural Carrington, and continued to live there all of his life. He married Mariann Kay Purcell on June 21, 1974, and from that 40 year union came three strong boys.  Jess A. Doeling and significant other Courtney LeAnn of Carrington, Nicholas A. Doeling (Michelle) of Marshall, MN, and Tyler J. Doeling of Carrington. Gary adored his two grandchildren Connor (6), Madelyn (3), and was excited about a third baby boy due to arrive in late January 2015.

He was very proud of his family and loved to spend as much time with them as possible. He especially liked the holiday gatherings and had stated that this past Christmas, with all the family together, had been one of the best.

Gary’s passion was farming and he was an excellent rancher when it came to his baby beef calves and mammas. His favorite machines were John Deere green and would always look to John Deere to accomplish the farming/haying. He processed hay for many horse owners over the years and had a reputation for producing excellent hay.

He was a master fisherman and deer hunter. Gary guided his boys and nephews on safe hunting. He was always hunting for the “big one”. Sometimes that happened and sometimes not, but he always had fun. He always wanted to start the hunt by talking about the “rules” that everyone needed to follow so he gained the nickname of “sheriff” during deer season.

Gary also learned how to cure and smoke meats and many friends and family had the pleasure of tasting one or two of his great products. He always wanted to try new recipes to see how they would taste and if he would save the recipe for another year.

Gary had an interest in hand guns and rifles, over the years his collection grew. He was particularly fond of hunting rifles making sure they had a good scope, so he could always bag what he was hunting.

Gary’s health began to fail the past four years and he could no longer enjoy the pastimes he once did; but he did enjoy watching old shows of “Walker, Texas Ranger” and often would record the shows if he would miss one, so he could catch up later. He was also an avid John Wayne fan and was happy that he could watch a John Wayne marathon during Christmas. His pool room is decorated with John Wayne memorabilia in honor of his favorite western movie star.

Gary was a kind man and was not afraid to show his emotions. He was quick to let his wife know he thought she “looked great” leaving for work. He also made sure he got his good-bye kiss every morning; even if it was hectic he would say “Are you forgetting something?” He truly was a gentle man.

In earlier years he enjoyed his bowling league and pool team. Although not a star in bowling he still kept the one trophy his team received for one of the Carrington tournaments. He was an excellent pool player and was taught by Al Ihringer from Bordulac. Although not having a bit of Swedish blood, Al would fondly call him “You big Swede”. Then he would bet Gary he could beat him in pool. Gary lost many dollars to Al until he mastered the pool table.

His favorite rock band was Lynyrd Skynyrd, and his two favorite songs were “FreeBird” and “Simple Man”. Simple Man fit Gary well as he was a person who only wanted to farm and ranch. He never desired to be the center of attention; nor did he dress to attract any attention. He truly enjoyed being a Simple Man.

Gary is survived by his wife Mariann; 3 children, Jess (Courtney), Nicholas (Michelle) and Tyler; 2 grandchildren Connor and Maddie, his father Edwin; sister Barbara Scheen; brother David (Clarine); and his mother-in-law Carrie Purcell.

Gary is preceded in death by his mother Dolores; father-in-law Wally Purcell; maternal grandparents Albert and Emelia Pedersen, paternal grandparents George and Evelyn Doeling, and one brother–in-law David Scheen.
