Donna Young

Donna Young, age 75, of Sykeston, ND, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at Golden Acres Manor, Carrington, ND.

Donna Aarhus was born on December 3, 1934, the daughter of Lewis and Ethel (Christensen) Aarhus in Breckenridge, MN. She attended and graduated from Walcott Public School in 1952. Donna attended college at Valley City University and received her teaching certificate. She taught grades 1-8 in a one room schoolhouse in Richland County, ND.

On June 1, 1956, Donna married the love of her life, Norman Young. They started their life together in Sykeston, ND, where Donna continued to teach in Johnson Township for several years. They were blessed with five children.

Her careers consisted of teaching, office manager at Sykeston Public School for twenty-seven years, cake decorating with her best friend, Marlene Grager, for fifteen years, co-owners of Mar-Don’s Country Catering with her husband, Norman and best friends, Marlene and Ray Grager, for fifteen years. During this time, she was also co-manager of the Sykeston Country Café for a year. Her greatest accomplishments were being a wonderful, loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Donna was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sykeston. She was actively involved in LWML for fifty three years and LLL couples club, a 4-H leader, published a cookbook with Marlene Grager, decorated cakes, and was very involved in the community of Sykeston, ND and Citrus Garden, AZ. Her gift of cooking was a blessing to many people.

Donna will always be remembered and deeply missed by her husband, Norman; two sons, Lynn (Bernette), Mesa, AZ and David (Gina), Sykeston, ND; two daughters, Lorie (Roger) Nymark, Moorhead, MN and Joni (Randy) Love, Bismarck, ND; her mother, Ethel Aarhus, Walcott, ND; three sisters, Marilyn Jordheim, Walcott, ND, Ellen Manske, Ontario, CA, Julie (Dean) Schultes, Olivia, MN; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lewis, and her infant twin son, Larry.

A special thank you to Presentation Hospice of Carrington, and Golden Acres Manor staff and residents, Pastor Biberdorf, Pastor Vold, many friends and family members for being caring and compassionate during this very difficult time. Words can not express the gratitude to Ray and Marlene Grager for their unending love and dedication to our family. Also, a very special thank you to Joni’s Godparents, Alvin and Sharon Retzlaff, for their love and support to our family during this trying time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Presentation Hospice of Carrington and Golden Acres Manor, Carrington, ND.

Message: Norman and Family: Dawn and I want to send our sincere condolences. So many times over the years my thoughts have returned to St. Paul's in Sykeston and the great people (Great Christians)that influenced me when I was growing up and Donnas was certainly one of them. I know she will be greatly missed by all of you and I know that you take great comfort in knowing that she is with our Lord and Saviour now and with all of those wonderful people that have gone on ahead of us.
