Warren Duval

Warren B. Duval, age 77, of New Rockford, ND, died Saturday, July 8, 2017, in Ave Maria Village, Jamestown, ND. On June 7, 2017, Warren suffered a stroke and spent the rest of his life between St. Alexis Hospital in Bismarck, ND and Ava Maria Village.

Warren Bruce Duval was born December 3, 1939, at the family farm in rural Milnor, ND, the son of Logan & Inga (Deitzler) Duval.  He graduated from Lisbon (ND) High School, and then received a 2-yr degree in Biology & Wildlife Management at Bottineau, ND.   Warren then farmed near Milnor for 6 years.   He then attended VCSU at Valley City, ND, and received a BA in Science Education.   Warren began his long teaching career in New Rockford.

On November 24, 1973, he married his wife, Sharon Naaden at St. Paul Park, MN.  From this union he had one daughter, Brita, and two sons, baby David and Christian.

Warren was a teacher at New Rockford Public School for 30 years.  He started the fall of 1967, and retired in May of 1997. Warren also spent his time coaching football, basketball and track.  He worked with many student athletes and followed the team’s progress.  Warren connected with his own children and the speech team for 6 years as their bus driver and 2nd assistant coach.  Warren also was teaching half time at Four Winds Public School in Fort Totten, ND.  He started at Fort Totten in the fall of 1998, and had just finished his 17th year there in May 2017.

Warren attended the New Rockford United Methodist Church until its closing, and then attended Federated Church UCC/UMC, Carrington.   He was also a member of New Rockford Eagles, and the former Jaycees.  Warren was involved in the Jaycee Gun Safety project, and as part of that, he had coached a BB gun team that went to State and then to International competition.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years Sharon of New Rockford; daughter Brita (Michael) Smith of Pelican Rapids, MN;  son Christian Duval of Fargo, ND; one grandchild, Kaylee Smith; three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law; and many nieces and nephews, friends, co-workers and former students.

Warren was preceded in death by son David Wayne, his parents Inga and Logan, and his seven siblings: Roy, Lowell, Orville, Myrtle, Phillis, Joyce, Shirley.

Warren touched thousands of lives and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to be given to his family.

Message: My deepest sympathies and prayers to the Duval family.  Mr. Duval was a great teacher and person.  Who would have thought the guy with the booming voice and yardstick was such a softie.  When Brita was born, he came in the classroom and wrote BRITA on the board and made the announcement.  He was walking on air.  Thank you Mr. Duval for being you. RIP Groovy Duvy.

Message: Sharon, Christian, Brita and Family,

Mr. Duval shared dinner with the NRHS Class 0f '76 on our 40th Reunion last year, we enjoyed his company and were so Happy to see him, sharing memories, laughing and reminiscing.  He came outside with us at the golf course as we gathered in a circle on the greens. Coach Duval helped our MC, Steve Gehrtz bring the class to Attention, by suddenly, in his Booming voice, shouted out, "Class, Cut the Chatter!" It was Awesome to hear his voice, taking our minds back almost 50 years, when many of us were in his Science Class. He has touched 1000's of students including New Rockford and recently on the Spirit Lake Nation. We are saddened by your loss of him here upon this earth and Pray for the Lord to wrap his arms around you comforting your hearts ♥ï¸

Brita's Prayer, Christian's eulogy, Ave Maria Chaplains message about Mr. Duval holding his hand and praying the Lords Prayer, along with Pastor Loewens sermon were heartfelt and beautiful

Blessings, The Class 0f '76

Message: I am so sorry for your loss. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28.  I hope that you find comfort in your faith. Mr. Duval was my science teacher and coach. We called him "Groovy Duvie." This was a 7th and 8th grade girls basketball players term of endearment for our coach. I also remember practicing "the wheel." I am amazed that that we won any games - junior high girls who are more worried about their big hair can be a challenge for any coach. But Mr. Duval stuck with us through the losses and wins. He will always be remembered as a man who worked well with students and athletes. I knew Mr. Duval also as a good neighbor and colleague of my dad's. Since my dad and Mr. Duval were not only science teachers at New Rockford Central together, but also at Four Winds School. He will be missed.

Message: He will always be "Coach" to me.  When I think back to my time at NRHS I think of two special teachers who had a great influence on my life.  One of those was Coach Duval.  (Terry Kemmer, you were the other.)  I first met Coach in 7th grade Life Science.  He taught me about Punnett squares.  He always had a fetal pig or calf in a freezer somewhere just waiting to be bisected for an anatomy lesson.  These things were amazing to me & he loved teaching about them.  Coach was dedicated to his students & we were to him.  I was blessed to be on the Jaycee BB Gun Team he coached when we won the state meet in Wahpeton & went on to the International Shootout in Tempe, AZ.  It was the first time in my life I flew on a commercial plane. After the written tests for North Dakota were temporarily lost & found only after the tournament, it was Coach who fought to get me my trophy when it was discovered I tied for 1st place in the girl's division.  He personally delivered it to my house.  Coach & Sharon were sweethearts at the time & Sharon accompanied us on our trip as the female chaperone.  I like to think that BB gun team had a little something to do with sealing the deal on their relationship:)  Of course I think we also broke the Jaycee chapter in paying for the trip!  Coach was one of the advisors for the Class of 77.  He was with us all 6 years & led us toward several award winning Homecoming floats.  He was with us for our 10th, our 20th, & our 30+1 year reunions.  I cannot think of my youth without fondly thinking of Coach Duval.  He had a way with unruly young adolescents & none of us will ever forget him.  I know he is in Heaven now with a yardstick in his hand, teaching & coaching, all the while shouting "cut the chatter" & "listen up people".  May these memories provide some comfort to his family.  We love you Coach!

Message: There's a special place in heaven for junior high school teachers. But for junior high teachers who stick with it as long as Coach did, who not only teach but also coach the kids? Well, that has to be heaven's most glorious place!! Think of the hundreds and hundreds of young lives he touched, taught and influenced. We weren't easy either! Gosh, if it wasn't Les Whetham or myself arguing with Coach, it was Jeff Hitz cutting off his eyelashes or Kathy McLaughlin painting her eyelids with nail polish! Ken Weisenberger always had a prank or two and Michelle Pfau had her Daisy BB gun strategies to figure out. All of us heard the whap of the yard stick against the desk and Coach yell 'Cut the chatter' and we loved it. We loved it because he was a teacher who cared about teaching and who cared about us! All of us are better people for having been taught by Coach. God bless his soul and comfort his family. Rita

Message: Wow.  So sad to hear this news.  Coach Duval is a legend.  Won't be forgotten by anyone who had him as a teacher or coach.  Great memories of basketball practices at "Westside School".  Praticing "The Wheel" (which we ran successfully exactly 1 time in a game!).  And telling us, before junior high football games, "They put their pants on one leg at a time, just like we do."  Great man who will be missed.  My thoughts and prayers to all family and those who call him friend.

Message: As a coach and a teacher I could not have more respect for Mr. Duval.  You knew, as a student, he had respect for you.  He would talk to you as if you were an equal, and also "check you" when needed.  With that booming voice and yard stick he was quite a presence. He was also a very good neighbor to my parents. I have this image of him and Kerwin Pierson arguing about science and debating in heaven.  Blessings to his loved ones.  This man left a mark on so many students and to say that about a man's life is saying so much.

I was saddened to hear of Mr. Duval's passing.  The first memory that came to me was of Mr. Duval teaching rebounding by the stage ... spread like an eagle and shake like a dog ... that was all he had to say.  Truly one of a kind and a TRUE ROCKET!  Take care,

Message: Will never forget the first time I heard Mr. Duval's loud, raspy voice coming from his classroom when I joined the faculty at New Rockford HS.  He had a definite connection with junior high students--a connection that I truly tipped my hat to on a daily basis--he appeared to love his time with junior high students but would probably never admit it.  Memories are so vital during this time and in the months ahead.  Thoughts and prayers, Duval family!  Terry Kemmer, business teacher (1974 - 1981)
