Leo Fornshell

Leo Fornshell, age 87, of Carrington, ND, died Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Golden Acres Manor, Carrington.

Leo George Fornshell was born May 7, 1930, at Carrington Maternity Home to Lee and Edna (Fandrich) Fornshell. His first birthday present was a baby sister, Betty. He attended grade school in Foster County and later moved to the Carrington School District where he graduated high school as an Honor Student in May of 1948. Leo went on to college at NDSU, Fargo, ND, for a few years and decided to go back to the farm with his dad and brother Jim in a partnership where they raised cattle and small grains.

Leo married Doris Anderson on October 14, 1962, at Augustana Lutheran Church, Sheyenne, ND.  They had two very happy life moments when they adopted their daughter Pam in May 1968, at the age of nine weeks old, and son Terry in June of 1970, at the age of three weeks old from Children’s Village in Fargo.

Leo was a member of the Federated Church where he served on the church board and rarely missed church throughout his life until the last couple of years. He was the Rosehill Township Assessor for many years. He had a passion for his farming and cattle until his retirement in 1994, after a heart attack and triple bypass. Leo continued his love of woodworking where he built many china cupboards and toy boxes for people. He loved playing cards when company came to visit, and going to the casinos. He also enjoyed sneaking away to get in a little fishing at “The Ripples”.

Leo and Doris made their final retirement trip when they moved to Carrington in April of 2007. They joined the Senior Citizens Center, where Leo held office on the board there until Alzheimer’s started taking over his memory. After suffering a stroke, Leo moved to Golden Acres in August of 2016 where he resided until the time of his passing.

To mourn his passing are his wife Doris, Carrington; two children; Pam (Jim) Diede, Pingree, and Terry of Alexander, ND; his three grandchildren,  Jada (Matt) Specht, Severance, CO, Zach (Amber) Koenig, Beloit, KS, and Shayla Diede, of Pingree; two great-grandchildren Hannah and Hunter Koenig; his sister Dorothy Fornshell  and brother Tommy (Kate), all of WA; sisters-in-law, Mary Fornshell, Bismarck, and Ada (Frank) DeBolt of Jamestown, and  his brother-in-law Don Anderson, New Rockford along with many nieces and nephews and their children as well.
