Douglas Geier

Douglas Geier, age 73, of Heaton, ND, died Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at his home.

Douglas was born May 2, 1939 on his parents’ farm. He grew up in Berlin Township, in Wells Co., ND, with his parents, David and Martha (Koenig) Geier, and brother and sister, twins Earl and Pearl. As a boy he grew up very close to his dad and loved horses, tractors and guns. He caused his share of mischief and occasionally needed help from his big brother and sister. Doug attended country school for elementary grades, tried his hand at the Sheyenne Adventist Academy, and graduated from Heaton High School.

At age 19, Doug was first married and from that union had his first child Ronda. On December 6, 1968, at age 29, Doug married Judy Renner. They were wed in Golden, CO, and spent their early years working in the insulation industry, horseback riding in the mountains, and visiting their old time cowboy friends.

Doug continued insulating work until moving back to Berlin Township, ND to farm in 1973. Doug and Judy had 2 children together – David and Debra. Doug made sure work came first but always made time for fun and family with the Pettibone Saddle Club, Pelican Lake, Shack nights and taking Judy for a turn across the dance floor. Doug served on the Berlin Township Board as supervisor for many years; Sykeston Public School Board, Northern Plains Electric Coop Board, Central Power Electric Coop Board, and the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Coops Board.

Doug retired from farming but never gave up his passion for horses. “Saddle up Doug. It’s time to ride off into the sunset.

Doug is survived by his wife Judy; his children Ronda (Chris) Cheatham, Blackfoot, ID, David (Sheri) Geier, Heaton, ND, Debra (Allan) Allmaras, Buchanan, ND; his 7 grandchildren; one sister, Pearl (Jack) Eickholz, Pendleton, OR; one brother, Earl (Delta) Geier, Carlton, OR

Doug is preceded in death by his parents David and Martha Geier and his brother Russell.

Message: Judy, Deb, David and families, So sorry that Doug's life has been cut short.  I always looked up to Doug as such a visionary kind of guy.  He had such a positive presence on the Northern Plains board and in the industry, and I could always count on a good conversation when I saw Doug.  I am going through some hardship with my own father right now and am reminded of what a powerful presence a father has in the family. He undoubtedly molded all of you into the strong people that you are today and I know that you will forever have wonderful memories of one great cowboy.  Prayers to all of you.

Message: Dear Judy, Dave, Deb & family, We were so sad to hear of Doug's passing. He will be greatly missed. I wish the Navy had an exemption to include "second-fathers" in their policy so Ken could come back from Afghanistan and be there with you all now. During our last visit in June 2010, before Doug's illness, I remember thinking what a laid-back, peaceful person he was. AND he introduced me to the best treat/breakfast ever...June berries and cream! I tried it again in MD but without the June berries, it's not the same!! I hope you are filled with fond memories, love and peace as you celebrate this kind and generous man who you called husband and father. We are comforted in our sadness of his departure from this earth because we know his body is whole again and we will see him again in heaven. Still, the sadness of not having him here is very real. We're wrapping our arms around you all in love during this very difficult time.

We love you all!

- Ken & Cortney Schwalbe (& Kennedy and Morgan)

Message: Dear Judy and family, I know the grief you are going thru and feel so badly, My memories of Doug are that ready smile and always ready to talk "Horses", whenever I saw him in town or somewhere Doug was meeting up with a dear friend, This is something to remember, when you feel the loss and grief of your dear family member, think of a memory of something special you did together, and smile , knowing those memories will last forever and no one can take those away, thinking of you Judy, Deb and David, as you miss your very special husband/ and great father, someone told me one day to consider thunder as horses running in heaven, well, guess what ? I bet Doug already has one saddled up and taking a peaceful, painless ride!!! tami

Message: To the Geier Family.

I'm so glad that we got to come to the farm and have a nice visit with Doug, Judy, David, Rhonda, and the others that were there during our visit during hunting season.  We had a great visit with everyone, especially Doug.

Without Doug, Calvin, and our other friends in the area, my family wouldn't have been able to take care of the families land, houses, and help with our family passion for Duck Hunting.  On behalf of Grandpa & Grandma Duck, my parents Dick and Gayle, and entire family send our condolences to the Geier family.

My personal feeling is Doug is now riding horses in a place where he no longer feels the pain.

My son and I can't make the funeral, but we will be up to visit in October.

Best regards & god bless the Geier Family - Steve & Stevie Goetz of Portland, OR
