Gladys Guler

Gladys Guler, age 86, of New Rockford, ND, died Monday, July 4, 2016, at her home.

Gladys Genevieve Herr was born Dec. 9, 1929, in New Rockford, the daughter of Gottlieb and Helen (Edinger) Herr. Gladys received most of her education in Minot, ND, until her mother’s death, when she moved to New Rockford to live with her grandparents Chris and Minnie Edinger. During her high school years at New Rockford, Gladys worked for Beardsley Drug, where she developed the art of making tasty floats and malts. Gladys was involved in band, playing the tenor sax; she was also the band’s leading Majorette. “There Herr goes” was a comment from her yearbook. Gladys graduated from New Rockford High School in 1947. After graduation she moved to Minneapolis, MN, for a short adventure, where she worked in the banking business. When she moved back to New Rockford, she worked for the hometown bank, where she caught the eye and heart of a young and handsome George Guler.

Gladys and George were married May 15, 1950, in New Rockford. Gladys was a home maker, raising their 3 children and loved attending their many activities. She became her son Gary’s guardian and caregiver, following his National Guard accident in 1978, a role she took very serious. Gladys always prided herself on how well Gary was doing physically and his overall health. Gladys so enjoyed and was very proud and boastful of all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; commenting “There’s not a bad apple in the bunch!” George died in 1993, and Gladys continued to live in New Rockford, at their home which George had built.

Gladys is survived by her daughter Jeanne (David) Tews, of Jamestown; her son Gary, of New Rockford, daughter-in-law Ann Guler, of Pelican Rapids, MN; 8 grandchildren: Barbara, Eric, David, Matt, Gretchen, Abby, Nick, and Brian; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law Louis (Janet) Guler, of New Rockford.

She was preceded in death by her husband George, her son Tim, parents, brothers-in-law Harry, Ernest, and Norman; and one sister-in-law Katherine Anderson.
