Elaine Gussiaas

Elaine E. Gussiaas, age 86, of Carrington, ND, died Monday, February 4, 2013, at Carrington Health Center, Carrington, ND.

Elaine Emma Kuehn was born on November 13, 1926, at home in Wyard Township, Carrington, ND to William and Sophia (Vollmers) Kuehn.   She attended eight years of elementary school at a rural Wyard Township school and graduated from Carrington High School in 1944.  Her early years of employment were with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator in Carrington. She moved to Minneapolis for a short time working as a business office clerk at the Minneapolis Athletic Club.  In 1950, she moved back to Jamestown, ND; again employed by Northwestern Bell as a service representative.

On November 11, 1950, she was united in marriage to James A. Gussiaas at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington, ND.  Jim and Elaine lived and farmed in Nordmore Township for 32 years.  She was a very proud farmwife and homemaker, enjoying cooking, reading, sewing, gardening, plants and flowers.  She spent many years enjoying oil painting; and always enjoyed playing and listening to music.  She also enjoyed doing crafts with neighbors and writing poetry or readings for special events in the community.  In 1982, they built a home in Carrington and moved to town.  Days in town were filled with more gardening and flowers and many hours of just being Grandma.

Elaine was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church; her parents being charter members of Trinity Lutheran Church.  She was proud to know that her great granddaughter Kaydri is now the first fifth generation member of this church. She attended Sunday School and confirmation; was active with the Luther League and sang with the first organized choir in 1943.  She has since been active with the women’s organizations, spent several years with the compiling and organizing of church archives, working with church scrapbooks and has served with the library committee,  and recently as a chairman of the Sunshine Committee,  and very committed with the group of ladies who do Quilting on Monday afternoons at Trinity.

She has been active in many community organizations also, including Carrington Health Center Auxiliary.  She was named Volunteer of the Year in 1995.  She took great pride in her yard in town and had it on the Carrington Auxiliary Yard tour.  She was also a member of Putnam House board.

She is survived by her five children; Don Gussiaas and wife Janice of Carrington; Darla Gussiaas, Fargo, ND;  Duane Gussiaas and wife Lynette of Sioux Falls, SD;  Kent Gussiaas and wife Vickie of Carrington, ND; and Brenda Hoye of Fargo, ND.  Her grandchildren include; Darcy (Marty) Schenck of Hawley, MN, Melissa (Jesse) VanNevel of Moorhead, MN, Greg (Monica) Gussiaas of Fargo, ND; Kristin (Josh) Cabler of Carrington, ND; Jerome Gussiaas of Minneapolis, MN; Michael (Krista) Gussiaas of Spearfish, SD;  Tara (Ricky) Archuletta of  Fountain City, CO.; Brian Gussiaas of Staten Island, NY;  Jon (Katie) Gussiaas of Carrington, ND;  Jessica Gussiaas  Bismarck , ND;  Rebecca Gussiaas attending school at Moorhead, MN.; Sara (Adam) Lingwall of Fargo, ND and Allison (Aaron) Muehlberg of Henderson, NV; Great Grandchildren include; Matthew Gussiaas;  Jordyn, Jayden, Jaxon, and Jaymeson Schenck;  Brooklyn and Skyla VanNevel,  Devan Peterson, Addyson and Alayna Gussiaas; Kaydri Cabler; Jacob  Helmbrecht;   Ainsley and Tucker Gussiaas;  Ava and Hannah Archuletta; Asher Lingwall. Message: To Elaine's dear family, sister and extended family and friends, You were blessed beyond words to have Elaine as your mother, grandmother/great grandmother, sister, friend, etc. I too am grieving as Elaine became a second mother to me. She had been one of my own mother's dear friends and since I have gotten to know her since 2004, I too have come to love her as my mother once did. Today, it feels like the death of my own mom all over again.
God Bless all of you! I cannot say enough about how proud she was of each one of you. She talked so much to me about you that I feel a kinship to your family. You are in my prayers and KNOW, one day when the sky splits and our Savior returns, you will be reunited with Elaine if you know the Lord personally. Think on these things.
