Beatrice Hanson

Beatrice M. Hanson, 86, of Sheyenne, ND, died Thursday, January 3, 2013, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford.

She was born April 8, 1926, at Conneaut, Ohio. She was raised at rural New Rockford, attending school at the Rockford Consolidated School. She attended high school in New Rockford.
Beatrice was united in marriage to Theodore Hoffman on October 16, 1945, and they moved to rural Sheyenne. In 1946, they moved into Sheyenne. He died in 1954. On February 14, 1965, she married Harold B. Hanson. They continued to live in Sheyenne. He died in 1975.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church and served there as Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School teacher, as well as being an active member of the Ladies Aid, serving as president, secretary and treasurer. She served on the First Lutheran Church Council as secretary and numerous special committees. She was also a member of the Sheyenne School PTA while her children attended school there; the Sheyenne Homemakers Club, receiving her 25-year pin from the ND Extension; and the Royal Neighbors of America Lodge in Sheyenne from 1950-1981, serving as receiver. She was a member of the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd Auxiliary, serving at various times as president, vice president and secretary. From 1981-1983, she was District Chairperson of the Democratic Women and also served as treasurer. She was an active member of the Sheyenne Civic Association, serving in various offices and on many of its committees at that time. She was also recognized in the 1984 edition of Who’s Who in North Dakota.

Following the death of her husband in 1954, she worked various jobs in the community to support her family. In 1957, she became postal clerk at the Sheyenne Post Office. She was appointed officer-in-charge of the post office in 1970 and in 1971 she was commissioned Postmaster. She retired from the post office in 1977. She also served the City of Sheyenne as Auditor for 25 years, retiring in 2008.

Beatrice enjoyed sewing, needlework and quilting, especially when her children were growing up. She was an avid stamp collector and enjoyed bowling on a Sheyenne team at Wonder Lanes in New Rockford. She was a member of a card club, enjoyed playing bingo, going on Homemakers trips and yearly trips to California to spend time with Harold’s family. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren, who were very dear to her heart.

Survivors include her daughter Patti (Doug) Clifton, Sheyenne; son, David (Connie) Hoffman, Fargo; granddaughters, Kirsten Oatman, Hastings, NE, Jena (Rance) Brown, Sun Prairie, WI, Jessica (Bryan) Klick, Maple Grove, MN; grandsons, Jared Clifton, Sheyenne, and Andy Hoffman, Fargo; great-grandsons, Ramsey and Brandon Oatman of Hastings, NE; sister-in-law, Alerene Hoffman of New Rockford; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; daughter Faye Hoffman; and grandson, Brett Clifton.
