Lillie Hartl

Lillie Mae Hartl, age 94, passed to New Life on March 12, 2017, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND.  She was born In Superior Township near New Rockford, ND, on April 25, 1922, the fourth daughter of William Conrad and Dora (Zehrfeld) Christ.  There she attended rural school and graduated from New Rockford High School after which she earned her teaching certificate from Valley City Teachers’ College (now known as Valley City State University) in Valley City, ND.  She taught for 10 years in various Eddy and Wells County rural schools, followed by 20 years teaching 5th and 6th graders at St. James Grade School in New Rockford.

Lillie was united in marriage to Staff Sergeant Vincent E. Hartl on July 28, 1945, while he was stationed with the U.S. Army in Columbia, South Carolina.  They later raised their 5 daughters and twin sons on the family farm near New Rockford, which they farmed with Vincent’s brother, Edward.  Vincent died on April 30, 1991.  Lillie moved to Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in August 2013.

Lillie loved her immediate and extended family and enjoyed her teaching career, music, reading books and reciting poetry.  She had a gift for memorizing long poems and expected her students to do the same. Family trips in a small station wagon with her family of 9 were memorable adventures. In response to the lean years she experienced in her youth, Lillie took great joy in ensuring her family and guests were well-nourished.  She was gratified over the years by encounters with many of her former students and enjoyed their shared memories.

For many years, Lillie was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Superior Homemakers’ Club, N.D. Retired Teachers’ Association and St. Cecilia’s Circle of St. John’s Altar Society.  Lillie was known for her kind and compassionate heart and unconditional love.  She had her own unique brand of humor which often caught her family off-guard and delighted.  She always managed to make everyone feel welcome and included.

Those left to mourn her passing and honor her memory are 2 daughters, Linda (Wilfrid) Lies, Fargo, ND, and Lois (Bill) Schafer, West Fargo, ND; 2 sons, Thomas (Dawn), New Rockford and Timothy (Kim Brown), Sheyenne, ND; 10 grandchildren, Shannon (Ron) Thompson, Matthew (Jessy) Diem, Ryan (Emily) Schafer, Jeremy (Heidi) Geske, Matthew (Ili) Geske, Ben (Caitie) Wagner, Jessica (Case) Dillon, Reid (Cody) Hartl, Tessa Hartl and Jared Hartl; 13 great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Lillie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 3 daughters, Rita Barbeau, Patricia Wagner and Renee Geske; a  grandson, Eric Schafer; 4 sisters, Margaret Cann, Ida Womacks, Wilma Guler and Betty Christ; and 1 brother, Reynold Christ.
