James "Jim" Hewitt

James Leslie Hewitt, 80, Carrington, ND, died Thursday, September 8, 2016, at Sanford Health in Bismarck, ND, surrounded by his wife and adoring family.

James Hewitt was born on August 14, 1936, in Sykeston, ND to Leslie and Ethel Hewitt. He was raised on what became his heaven on Earth, the family farm in Sykeston.  Jim received his education in Sykeston, and on June 22, 1955, he was married to the love of his life, his Norwegian darlin, Darlene Hanson, in Fessenden, ND.  They lived in Sykeston for 1 year before moving to their permanent home in Carrington.

In 1966, Jim opened a service station business on Main Street in Carrington, where he perfected his gift of gab and never met a stranger.  He retired from that business in 1987.  His love for the land and nurturing soul, led him to farm the family land for 7 years. Not being one to ever sit idle, and his love for animals, his next endeavor was raising sheep at the farm for 25 years. No lamb was ever too sick or too lame to not be saved by Jim, even if it meant he had to nurse them back to health in the family kitchen.

He enjoyed the serenity of the farm, family gatherings, and loved all of his rescued four legged friends.

Jim had a golden heart and had a special place in it for his wife of 61 years. Darlene, their children and his 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.  He was amazed and felt so blessed with his loving family.

Jim is survived by his wife, Darlene, 2 sons, Scott (Deb), Sykeston, and Paul (Jackie), Steele, ND, 3 daughters, Amy Greg) Stoike, Poway, CA, Wendy (Jim) Andries, Allen, TX, Beth (Troy) Trottier, Carrington; 1 brother, Rusty (Kathy) Hewitt, Fargo, ND; 2 sisters Judy (Clyde) Johnson, Carrington, Joelle Hewitt, Apache Junction, AZ; and 2 sisters-in-law Marlys Hanson and Sharon Hewitt. Jim is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Lorrie Hewitt, daughter-in-law Brenda Hewitt, his grandson, Alex Stolz, one brother, Jeff, and one sister, Janice Davis.

Message: I would like to express my sympathy to Darlene and her children on the loss of Jim. Jim and I were members of the class of 1954 in Sykeston. He was also a second cousin. Remember our high school years fondly and I last saw him out on the farm. We were just driving by and saw him, stopped to chat. It was like old times. RIP Jim.
