Hilma Erickson

Hilma Erickson, age 91, of New Rockford, formerly of Sheyenne, ND, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford, ND.

Hilma was born on March 4, 1921, in Sheyenne, the daughter of Even and Ruth (Larson) Hanson. She grew up at Sheyenne and attended Grandfield #2 country school and graduated from Sheyenne High School in 1940. She was confirmed at Eden Lutheran Church, rural Sheyenne.

Hilma was united in marriage to Otto Erickson on June 8, 1942, at the First Lutheran Church Parsonage in Sheyenne. They moved to the Erickson family farm where she cared for her mother-in-law, Laura Erickson, until her death; she was also a caregiver to her mother and an aunt, Magnhild Larson until their deaths.

Hilma was involved in the family farm and worked alongside her husband. They retired in 1992, and Hilma moved to Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in 1993. Otto entered LHGS in 1995, and died on July 26, 1999.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Sheyenne, served as church secretary/treasurer, Sunday school teacher, active in Ladies Aide and the church choir.

Hilma is survived by one sister, Dorothy (Rueben) Rue, Minot, ND; a half-brother Oliver Hillestad, many nieces and nephews; 2 sisters-in-law, Vi Jordre, Oberon, ND and Florence “Bunnie� Erickson, New Rockford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother, Henry Hanson; a half-sister, Edna Hallquist; and a half-brother, Herman Sundquist.

Message: I enjoyed talking to Hilma when I was an employee at the Benson County FSA office. She was an awesome person and loved Otto and the life on the farm. May she rest in peace and God Bless Hilma.
