Phyllis Holey

Phyllis S. Holey, 82, New Rockford, died Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford.

Phyllis was born October 22, 1932, to Milton and Inez Moen at rural Warwick, ND. She grew up in Sheyenne and graduated from Sheyenne High School. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. In 1951 she married Hersel Holey in Devils Lake. They lived and farmed in rural New Rockford. In addition to the numerous duties of a farm wife, she worked at Lucy’s Cafe, Hamburger King, and the bowling alley. Phyllis was one of the first employees at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd. She started in dietary and then became a CNA. She continued her education at NDSCS and became the head Restorative Aide at the Lutheran Home until CVA’s and heart conditions forced her retirement in 1998. She worked for approximately 32 years at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd. Phyllis and Hersel had two children: Harlan, who died at age 12, and Debbie of Prairie Village, Kansas and New Rockford.

Phyllis gave selflessly to her job and her children. She was an expert crocheter, donating many items for fund raisers, including entire bedspreads. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and Circle in New Rockford, the Fraternal Order of Eagles for 40 years, and was a Campfire Girls leader.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie; three nieces, Denise Lura Reis, New Rockford, Patrice Lura Gedrose, Washburn, and Jody Lura Carlson, New Rockford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Hersel, one son, Harlan Milton Holey, one sister, Marlys Moen Lura, brother-in-law, Milton Lura, and stepfather, Clyde Harland Hall.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorials be sent to the family, or be directed to the New Rockford Senior Center or James River Humane Society in Jamestown.

Message: My heart goes out to your family. I am so sorry for your loss. What pain hurts worse than the pain of losing someone that you love? Ms. Phyllis was loved and she will be dearly missed.  Again, I am so sorry. Though the  pain you're feeling must seem unbearable, please remember that you are not  alone. Psalms 46:1 says, "God is  our refuge and strength, a help that is readily found in times of distress." Pray to Him for strength. Weep to Him when there are no words. One of the poets of the Bible said at Psalms 56:8, "You keep track of my wandering.  Do collect my tears in your skin bottle." You see, God understands your pain and He cares for you very much (1 Peter 5:7). And He will really help you get through this difficult time (Isaiah 41:10).

Message: I am so sorry to hear about my Aunt Phyllis. My family and I were so touched when she came to my dad's funeral; it meant a lot to us.  She was a dear lady, and she endured way too much pain in her life.  I know she's at peace now that she's reunited with her son & husband.  I'm sending love & hugs to my cousin Debbie.
