On May 18, 1942, he was united in marriage to Mavis Hultgren at McHenry, ND. They moved to Ft. Lewis, WA, while Bert was in the US Army. Mavis Hov died on December 29, 2006, and Bert soon moved to Dayton, WA, to live at the home of his daughter.

Throughout his career, Bert was in the roofing industry, and had also owned a painting company with his son.   His life focused around his family and his grandchildren. Bert was the glue that kept his family together; working tirelessly to make sure everyone had what they needed.
