Jerry Fleming

Jerry Fleming, age 78, of New Rockford, ND, formerly Warwick, ND, died Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford.

Jerry Allen Fleming was born August 3, 1934, at home in Eddy township, Eddy County, to Wm. James and Harriet (Eller) Fleming.  He graduated from 8th grade at Lake Washington School and attended Benson County Ag. School at Maddock.   Jerry then stayed home to help with the farm work, and later worked for Archie Campbell Construction doing road work.

Jerry and Marlyss Hendrickson were married on March 18, 1954, at Sheyenne, ND.  After living for 12 years on rented farms, they bought the home place from Mom & Dad Fleming, raising beef cattle, milking cows, and growing small grains and sunflowers.  Jerry also owned and operated two buses, driving for the Warwick School District for 5 years and for the New Rockford School District for 35 years.  He was a mechanic and overhauled all his own machinery plus the school bus.

Jerry was a member of First Lutheran Church, Eddy County Farmers Union, and Central North Dakota Steam Threshers, all New Rockford.  He was an Eddy County Commissioner for 14 years; served on the Eddy County Social Service board, and served as Vice President of CNDSTR.   He enjoyed camping, restoring old tractors, going to Steam Thresher Reunions, reading, visiting, listening to old time music, and telling jokes.  Jerry was a good Samaritan, always helping someone who needed help.   He loved his grandchildren and loved to arm wrestle with them, or teach them how to drive tractors and do other things on the farm.

Jerry is survived by his wife Marlyss; two sons, David (Kathryn) and Wm. James (Michelle), both of Warwick; four daughters, Cheri (Lyle) Schaffer, Ft. Gordon, GA, Lisa Hartl, Devils Lake, ND; Heidi (Mitch) Irmen, Fargo, ND, Marianne (Darrin) Quittschreiber, Arthur, ND;  19 grandchildren & 8 Great-Grandchildren; 2 brothers, Gaylen, Gettysburg, SD, Gene, Pueblo, CO; 3 sisters, Muriel (Don) Stillwell, Fort Mill, SC, Averiel Wood, Devils Lake, ND, Glenna Gjestvang, New Rockford; several nieces and nephews; 2 sisters-in-law, Emma Fleming, Columbia CA, Patsy Hendrickson, Devils Lake; 4 brothers-in-law, Richard Weisenburger, New Rockford, Don (Karen) Hendrickson, Muncie, IN, Ted Schimelfenig, Carrington, ND, and Richard Floyd, Casa Grande, AZ.
