Faye Kanzelman

Faye Kanzelman, age 75, of New Rockford, North Dakota, died peacefully on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Mayo’s Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN with her family at her side.

Irene Faye Olson was born July 30, 1939, the daughter of Ingvald and Florence Olson (Lindstrom) at the family farm outside Sheyenne, ND. She was the ninth of eleven children. She graduated from Sheyenne High School in 1957 and attended Minot State Teachers College.

In 1958, Faye began teaching school at Norway Lake #3 between Maddock and Hamberg, ND, and during this time met her husband, Darwyn Kanzelman, at a dance in Oberon, ND. They married on September 7, 1959, and moved to Watford City, ND, where she bore two children, Tami Jo and Michael. They moved to New Rockford in 1963 and added a third child, Robert.

Faye worked for the New Rockford Public School for 27 years, first as a Teacher's Aide in Special Education from 1975–83 and then as Business Manager until retiring in 2002. During this time, she was an active member of First Lutheran Church, where she played various roles including Sunday School teacher, bookkeeper, and member of the cemetery board and a women's circle. She also spent a short time on the New Rockford volunteer ambulance service. In recent years, she had enjoyed being a member of a quilting group and the Red Hats.

Faye enjoyed many hobbies including quilting, sewing, baking, and even painting at one time. She loved music, children, and pretty things. Nothing was more important to her than family, and she was happy to travel many miles to lend a hand, support her grandkids, or attend gatherings. She overcame many challenges in her life, including the loss of her son, two battles with cancer, a neck surgery, and a life-threatening pneumonia, relying on her faith, her friends, her family, and her own stubbornness.

Faye is survived by her daughter Tami (Wayne) Hipp of Riverdale, ND, her son Bob (Beth) Kanzelman of Rochester, MN, her five grandchildren, Tony Hipp of Grand Forks, ND, Josh Hipp of Riverdale, ND, Jake Hipp of Underwood, ND, Kayla and Nathan Kanzelman of Rochester, MN, and three sisters, Marlys Peterson of Sacramento, CA, LouAnn Carlson of Seattle, WA, and Peggy Gudmunson of New Rockford, ND.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Darwyn, her son Michael, her brothers Eugene, Ernest, James, and Loren Olson, her sisters Shirley Westby, Lily Westby, and Virginia Braathen, and her dear friend Marlys Lura.

Message: Moving to California as young girl, I only got back to see my ND family once or twice over the years.  Aunt Faye, Uncle Darwin, along with Cousins Tami & Bob were always thought of fondly and remained my connection to North Dakota (as well as Grandma Myrtle). It's comforting to know Faye & Darwin in heaven, in the hands of God. I want my cousins to know they are in my prayers for peace now and increased joy and comfort as time passes. Blessings. Cousin Kelly.
