June (Helton) Larson shared her last cup of coffee on the afternoon of October 19, 2015. She passed away with family nearby in the comforts of her home. With that special twinkle in her eye, she kept her age a mystery to anyone who dared to ask it. Her spirit is carried on by 5 children, 14 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren that she unconditionally loved and adored.

Born in Antioch, TN, just outside of Nashville, June picked up a slight southern drawl, an ear for country western/honky tonk music, and an eye for good-lookin’ cowboys early in life. As an independent young girl that loved the camera, she took the train to California to become a movie star. Plans changed when she met a tall, charismatic cowboy from North Dakota stationed at the local navy base during WWII. On February 2, 1947, she married Carlton Walfred “CW” Larson, and they built a life, family, farm, and ranch from the ground up in Hawksnest Hills. Over the years, her kitchen became a main stop for many neighbors, friends, and the growing numbers of kids and grandkids that could always rely on a handful of her fresh baked cookies or rhubarb pie.

When she moved to Carrington in 1996, her home remained a central station for all that lived near or far. The coffee was always on, and she was happiest when the house was full of people telling stories and laughing about old times. Her greatest joy became her great-grandkids, who always knew where to find ice cream sandwiches, donuts, Oreos, and pop in the fridge if they needed one. She enjoyed holding them as babies, making up great stories and nursery rhymes to tell them as they grew older, and never minded if the living room was full of toys, or popcorn, or the couch cushions were torn apart from the kids running back and forth and playing around all day. She preferred it that way.

June was a “home-maker” in every sense of the word until her very last days. She made all feel warm and welcome and always howdy-ed them from “her chair” the minute they opened the door. The sacred space she created for friends and family to gather around, have a cup of coffee, catch up, and laugh together will be missed by many.

She is survived by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whose photos are spread all across her kitchen cabinets; children Carlton (Lois) Larson Jr., Delon (John) Harding; Gayla (James) Kutz; Larry (Mary Kay) Larson; and LeAnn (Joseph) Voglewede; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her husband Carlton Walfred Larson, son-in-law Roger Morlock, eldest granddaughter Deann Blondeau, great-grandson Solomon Topp, her parents, and three siblings.
