Mary Lovejoy “Wichapi Wanji Win” (One Star Woman), age 67, of St. Michael, ND passed onto the Spirit World on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at her home in St. Michael, surrounded by her loving family. Mary’s (Noonie) last wishes were to be brought home from Altru Hospital and be with all her family.

Mary Louise (Whiteshield) Lovejoy was born on April 15, 1947, at St. Jude Hospital, Ft. Totten, ND, the daughter of Felix and Lucy (Mallard) Whiteshield.

She married the love of her life, Francis “Frank” Lovejoy on August 29, 1980, in Minnewaukan, ND.

She has 10 children, 54 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Mary Lovejoy comes from a family of Dakota leaders: Red Thunder, Wanatan, Wanatan 2 Suna, Clarence Whiteshield and Felix Whiteshield.

She had earned generosity, bravery, fortitude, humbleness, faithfulness towards everyone, and was truly a Dakota Winyan.

She attended United Tribes Technical College in 1980, and graduated with a degree in Business Clerical in 1981. She also went on to further her education at Candeska Cikana College and graduated with honors in Liberal Arts.

She worked at Heartland Care Center, Good Samaritan Home, and St. Jude’s Home as a CNA, at BIA Criminal Investigation, CHR Program, Spirit Lake Casino, and Sioux Manufacturing.

Noonie enjoyed participation in traditional dancing, Bingo, going to the Casino, playing cards, sewing, listening to her favorite music: Alan Jackson, George Strait, Sammy Kershaw, and Pow-Wow music. She loved going to her grandson Dustin’s basketball games. Mom always had her door open to anyone who ever needed place to stay, sleep or eat.

Noonie was survived by her husband, Francis “Frank” Lovejoy; her children Jada Longie, Keith (Angel) Longie, Gerald (Connie) Longie, Fanette (Dan) Lovejoy, Myrna (Richard) Whiteshield, James (Sandy) Lovejoy, Ivy (Paul) Lovejoy, Kasey (Brooks) Goodbird, Ashley (Tylin) Slaughter, Michael (Jeanette) Jackson; sisters Maryann Blackbull, Sharon Brien, Elaine (Duane) Guy, Carol Littleghost, Brenda Whiteshield, Bernadine Whiteshield; and brother Freeman Whiteshield. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Felix and Lucy Whiteshield; sons Francis Lovejoy, Jr, Jason Longie; granddaughters Sydney Lovejoy, Nicole Baer, Lauryn Whiteshield, Chantae Whiteshield; grandsons Dalton and Dillion Whiteshield; aunts and uncles Kenneth and Angeline LaCroix, Virginia Whiteshield, Sabastian Mallard, Isaac Mallard; cousin Viola Brown; sisters Tina, Doris, Nita, and Donna Mae Whiteshield; brothers Wilson and Richard Whiteshield.

We are sorry if we have left anyone out, it was not intentional. We appreciate your kindness and understanding.
