Donald McAvoy
Donald Arthur McAvoy, 63, New Rockford, ND, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, near New Rockford. Don was born in New Rockford on August 19, 1953, to Joseph and Frances (Kurtz) McAvoy. He attended school in New Rockford, and graduated in 1971. Don began farming the family farm east of New Rockford, which he continued until the time of his death. In 2004, he married Evelyn Roones in LaMoure, ND. He was an avid collector of guns and antique tractors, always showing his newest additions to anyone who came to visit. Don raised Percheron horses and loved to drive them, giving trailer and sleigh rides whenever possible. Don loved any kind of hunting, but especially deer hunting as it gave him the opportunity to use many different "weapons" from his collection. He travelled to Colorado elk hunting - which he talked about for months when he returned. Don always had a story to tell. His family was very important to him. He always had a plan for them when they would come to visit. Don was a member of the Circle Trailriders Inc., serving on the board for several years. He served on the Sheldon Township board for 40 years. He was a member of the New Rockford Steam Threshers and National Percheron Associations. Don is survived by his wife Eve; two step-daughters, Robin (Tom) Rehborg, Mandan, ND, and Michelle (Trevor) Trautman, Phoenix, AZ. Three granddaughters, Morgan Heger, Mandan, Shayla Heger, Fargo and Jenna Trautman, Phoenix; and one great-granddaughter, Finley Heger, Mandan. Also two aunts: Wilma Kurtz and Phyllis B. Topp, both rural New Rockford; and two cousins, Jay Topp and Judy Mechtle. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph; and two aunts, Wanda Kurtz and Marion Mechtle.
