Douglas Meier

Douglas Meier, 69, rural Cathay, ND, died unexpectedly at his home Tuesday, March 28, 2017.

Douglas Martin Meier was born September 26, 1947, the son of Chester and Ellen Meier. He graduated from New Rockford High School in 1965, and attended NDSU where he was a member of Farmhouse Fraternity. After graduating in 1969, he returned to the family farm at Cathay where he farmed with his brother Donovan. He served with the North Dakota National Guard from 1970-1976.

He was a Woodward Township Supervisor, lifelong supporter of the New Rockford Golf Club, and a devoted New Rockford High School athletics fan. After retiring, he voluntarily helped his nephews on the farm in many ways.

He is survived by his mother Ellen, New Rockford, twin brother Donovan (Judy) Meier, Cathay, brother Dennis (Ryma) Meier, Wheatland, ND; nephews Preston (Mindy) Meier, Jordon Meier, Mike Meier, Kevin (Amy) Meier, and nine great-nieces and nephews.

Message: Dear Don, Judy and the Meier Family,  The memories of Doug are few but all were pleasant and fun. I didn't realize until late in life that he had such a dry sense of humor and you had to be careful because he seemed to always be evaluating you for an opening or something you said to that wasn't consistent with your beliefs or his.  About making money, did he still have his first earned nickel??  I bet he didn't, he probably donated it to a friend or a cause that was close to him.  The years do pass so quickly and we all will miss him.

Message: In the fall of 1969, I went to college and pledged Farm House. Doug and Pat Reidesl, and Wayne Muscha of Harvey were 5th year seniors, living in the pit, working at the barns. Doug and Pat have passed.  I always enjoyed Doug. I never got to NR much, but he was always fun and had some pithy advice on how to make money; it usually involved not spending it.

Message: I will always remember Doug's generosity and his good heart. We had many good times together, including our times Thursday nights at the clubhouse. Doug was not lucky shaking dice! He was taken from us too early, as many of our New Rockford friends have. To Donovan and the Meier family, remember the good times.

Message: Dear Dennis, Donovan and family,

Always hard to know what to say in times like these. I know as brothers you had a special relationship and as twins there is a bond that no one else can understand. We have twin sons and their relationship is unique. I'm happy that I was able to visit both Doug and Donovan this summer, even if only for a short time. Almost 40+ years since I last saw Donovan and 50 since I last saw Doug. The years passed by too quickly. Each time I pass by the Wheatland sign on I-94, I think that I should stop and see Dennis. I'll have to make it happen. I remember the "verbal battles" that Doug, Donovan, Dennis, Mark, Pat, Lee and myself had. The subjects ranged from Hereford/Angus/Shorthorn to John Deere/International, Farmers Union/Farm Bureau and Republican/Democrats etc...............The fun part was that the "players" on each "team" changed, depending on the topic being discussed. I was always included even though I was the only non "farm" boy. Dwell on the pleasant times and memories that the three of you developed throughout the years. We'll be praying for you.
