Myrtle J. Alfstad

Myrtle Alfstad, 92, of Aberdeen, SD, died in Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD, on Sunday, November 13, 2011.


Myrtle J. Helland was born February 23, 1919, in Plaza, ND, the daughter of Jacob and Martha (Solberg) Helland. She grew up there and attended school, later graduating from Parshall High School.


She moved to Sheyenne, ND, and was united in marriage to Frank W. G. Alfstad on November 23, 1940. They farmed on the Alfstad home farm until 1947, when Frank became employed with Burlington Northern Railroad. They moved to Bremen, ND, in 1947. They lived there until Frank retired in 1979, and they moved to New Rockford. Frank died on May 5, 1984. In 2010, Myrtle moved to Aberdeen.


Myrtle loved to bake, do gardening, and to sew. She did sewing for people in New Rockford for many years. Her time with family and friends was always very important to her, and always seemed to include a cup of coffee! She was a current member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Bremen.


She is survived by 8 daughters; Shelene (Gale) Halvorson, Tucson, AZ, Marlene (Blair) Chapman, Devils Lake, ND, Diane (Kenneth) Smith, Billings, MT, Arlys (Arden) Brorby, Maddock, ND, Virgene (Dean) Bemis, Billings, MT, Louella (Don) Schroyer, Crosby, ND, Nancy (Tim) Even, Aberdeen, SD, Penny (Dean) Forchas, Minnetonka, MN; 5 sons; Billy (Elaine) Alfstad, Rugby, ND, Dennis Alfstad, Lynnwood, WA, Jerry (Tammy) Alfstad, Sabin, MN, Bradley Alfstad, Jamestown, ND, Gregory Alfstad, Bismarck, ND; 27 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; Wallace Helland, and Donald Helland; 4 sisters; Lillian Steele, Violet Young, Ruth Alexander, Mae Lobeck; and her very dear friend, Karen Anderson of New Rockford.


Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters and two brothers.
