Rudy Neumiller

Rudolph “Rudy Neumiller was born on a farm near Box Elder, Montana, on June 26, 1917, to Christ Neumiller and Mathilda (Morlock) Neumiller. He died at the age of 95 on December 3, 2012, in Carrington, North Dakota.

His parents returned to North Dakota the same year Rudy was born, and farmed in the Heaton and Sykeston area. Rudy attended the Cottonwood School north of Heaton, ND. Rudy joined the Civil Conservation Corps in 1936, and worked near Troy, Idaho on a road building crew. He said that he once saw an entire boxcar of dynamite blown to create a tunnel. Rudy and Adeline Kurtz were married on November 9, 1944 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sykeston, ND, where they had both been confirmed. They first lived on a farmstead just north of Sykeston, and moved in 1949 to a farm west of Sykeston. They moved to Sykeston in 1980 and to Carrington in the fall of 2007.

Rudy’s hobby was work, and he liked to keep busy, whether on the farm or in his yard. He enjoyed visiting with friends and family, and holidays and Sundays were spent visiting with relatives or friends in the community. He liked taking summer evening drives with Adeline and looking at the crops, and enjoyed playing pool with his family and friends. He ran a threshing crew for many years before combines made the old separators obsolete. He could fix almost anything (including the thresh machine) with a piece of baling wire and a pair of pliers. He took great pride in caring for the Sykeston Cemetery for many years. It is where he will be buried.

A devoted husband and father, Rudy will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. Rudy is survived by children Gordon (Nancee) Neumiller, Mercer Island, Washington; Emilie (Tim) Lies of Flin Flon, Manitoba; Merlin (Susanne) Neumiller, Lincoln, California; eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sister Alvina Hammes, of Underwood, North Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son Clifford, his wife Adeline, three sisters Anne, Lydia, and Bertha; and three brothers Arthur, Paul, and Richard. Surely he was greeted with love at the Pearly Gates.

Name: Heather Hammond(Morlock)

Date: Feb. 4, 2013

Message: Dear Gordon and Emilie,
Thoughts and prayers go out to your families. My parents, Edgar and Esther were so fond of your mom and dad. During the Christmas holidays, dad would exchange a yearly letter with Rudy. Much conversation would occur who had the worst hand writing. The two couples kept a bond going even though there were many miles between them.
thinking of you at this time,
Heather Hammond(Morlock)

Message: Dear Friends, Neighbors and Family,

Thank you all for your kind wishes and fond remembrances of Dad.  He had a long life and was physically in remarkable shape right up to the end. He would tell anyone who offered one that he did NOT need a walker, cane or wheelchair!  His failing memory was frustrating for him, and hard to believe for those of us who knew how accurate that memory once was.

I had just been back to see him about a month before he died, and fully expected to see him again this summer.

Thanks again from all of us.

Gordon (Seattle), Emilie (Flin Flon) and Merlin (Sacramento)

Rudy & Adeline were like my 2nd parents when growing up. Rudy always teased me when I'd come home with Emilie from school, and make me feel welcome. I cherish the memories I have of your family.

Emilie-  My dad called to tell about Rudy.  I wish I could have been there today.  Keep in touch.   Jan

Message: Our thoughts are with the family. I always enjoyed visiting with Uncle Rudy. He always had such interesting stories about the past and the way he told them made them even better. Rudy and Adeline would often come to visit when I would travel to Sykeston to see my Mother, Alvina. Those were special times for me.
