Earl Sauer

 

Earl J. Sauer age 81, of Sheyenne, ND, died Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Carrington Health Center.

Earl was born May 14, 1933, at rural Carpio, ND, the son of Joseph and Mary (Chapdelaine) Sauer. He was born and raised, and attended school in Carpio. He was involved in a family livestock processing plant at Carpio. He attended NDSU at Fargo, ND. In 1953 he attended the International livestock Expo in Chicago, IL, and won second place in livestock judging.  Earl joined the US Army in November 23, 1956 and was honorably discharged in August 30, 1958. He then farmed at Sherwood, ND. He later continued his education at NDSSS at Wahpeton, ND.

Earl was united in marriage to Sandra Oiseth on January 30, 1965 at Foxholm, ND.  Three children were born to them. She died October 25, 1974.

Earl moved to Devils Lake, ND, and began working at North Dakota Telephone Company as a telephone tech, until his retirement in 1992. Earl moved to New Rockford, ND, in 1977. He was united in marriage to Verna Ziebart on August 13, 1983 at New Rockford. In November of 1990 they moved to a farm on the Continental Divide between New Rockford and Sheyenne. He began raising sheep in 1991 and continued until 2008.

Earl in his younger years was a pilot. He also enjoyed traveling. He served as Eddy County Commissioner from 2000 - 2012.  He also served on the Social Service board from 1987 - 2012. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and served on the Parrish council. He was a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus.

Earl is survived by his wife Verna of Sheyenne; two daughters Stacey (Tim) Miller of Christine, ND, Tammy (Gary) Neis of Mahnomen, MN; one son Joseph (Tammy) Sauer of Waverly, IA; nine grandchildren; two brothers Willard (Margo) Sauer of Fergus Falls, MN, Lyle Sauer of Winona, MN; three sisters Marge (Jack) Knoll of Bismarck, ND, Geraldine (Greg) Stefanich of Cedar Falls, IA, Cathy (Bill) Gumeringer of Bismarck; two sisters-in-law Marilyn Sauer of Glenburn, ND and Pearl Sauer of Carpio.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Sandra, his parents and three brothers Harold, Kelly and Richard.

Message: Earl was a classmate of mine and, like all of his family, he was one of the nicest guys I've ever known. I last saw him at a Sauer family gathering and although I hadn't seen him in years, I felt like we were "back in high school". I'm so glad we had that visit.
