BettyLou Schroeder

BettyLou Schroeder, 89 of Carrington, ND joined her heavenly family Friday, June 20, 2014. She passed away spending her final days at the Carrington Health Center with her loving family around her.

BettyLou Wells was born March 9, 1925 in Blackduck, MN the daughter of Leonard and Ruth (Parks) Wells. Her family moved to Carrington when BetttyLou was one year old. She attended Nordmore Township School (in Foster County) and graduated from Carrington High School in 1942.  She immediately began employment at the Triple A and the FEED and SEED offices located in the Foster County courthouse. In 1945 she moved to Minot, ND where she was the bookkeeper at Haas Inc. and shortly after was united in marriage to Wilfred Schroeder on November 19, 1950 at the Federated church in Carrington. After Wilfred’s discharge from military service, they began farming near Barlow, ND, where BettyLou was also clerk of the Barlow school board. In 1959 they purchased the current farmstead near Bordulac where they established a dairy and cropping operation.

BettyLou was a member of Grace Lutheran church of Carrington where she taught Sunday School for many years. Later she and Wilfred joined Trinity Lutheran church where they remained faithful members for the rest of their lives. She was also a member of the LLCW and the VFW Auxiliary Post 3524.

After retiring from farming and ranching, BettyLou devoted more time to enjoying her grand- and great-grandchildren, gardening with Wilfred, and to the very end would keep a detailed farm account ledger.  She found great satisfaction in nurturing her flowers, harvesting and canning garden produce and caring for her dog and cats. She was like many from her era, a traditional supportive farmer’s wife active in every aspect of operating a farm and ranch, keeping a proper house, nurturing five children, and contributing to the community.

She is survived by her loving family of three sons Jerome (Karen) Fargo, Allen (Paula) Madison, SD, Wes (Brenda) Cold Springs, MN, one daughter Becky (Jeff) Engels New Rockford, ND, Daughter-in-law Chris Schroeder, Carrington, ND, as well as 11 grandchildren, and eight (soon to be 10) great-grandchildren.

BettyLou was preceded in death by her parents, sister Margaret, brother Delmer, husband Wilfred and son Jeff.

She was a loyal friend, excellent listener, loving parent and servant of God, and in her own quiet way she left this world. Mom positively affected the lives of many people all who will miss her love and support.
