Shawn Charboneau, Sr.

Shawn Randall Charboneau, Sr. “Cante Mato� (Bear Heart) began his spirit journey on September 15, 1973. The Angels came to guide him home to his Lord on August 13, 2010 at rural Tokio, ND.

Shawn Randall Charboneau was born to Robert Charboneau and Cheryl Cloud-GoodIron at Devils Lake, ND. Shawn attended Early Headstart at St. Michael, and grade school in Oberon and Minnewaukan, ND. He continued his education at Four Winds High School at Fort Totten, graduating in 1992. He also served in the ND National Guard during his Junior year.

Shawn enlisted in the US Navy on January 24, 1993. He received his basic training at the USS Naval Air Station in Miramar, CA, with the VF-211 Fighter squadron and VFA-125 Strike Fighter squadron at the Naval Air Station at Lemoore, CA. He served on (CVN72) USS Theodore Roosevelt, (CVN73) USS George Washington, (CV64) USS Constellation, (CV63) USS Kittyhawk, (CVN68) USS Nimitz, and VAW-78 Naval Air Station at Norfolk, VA. Shawn served ranks as an E-5 Petty Officer 2nd class. His deployments included Western Pacific Deployment, where he served under Operation Desert Shield in the Persian Gulf, while in VF-211 on board the USS Nimitz (CVN68), numerous counter drug narcotic deployments to Puerto Rico and South America and various Caribbean Islands. The aircrafts he maintained included the F-14 Tomcat, F/Z-18 Hornet, and the E2-C Hawkeye. Shawn was honorably discharged from the Navy in June 2003.

Shawn met Elizabeth Teitz and they were married on February 25, 1995, in Las Vegas, NV. Their daughter, Sierra Rain was born on March 5, 1997, in San Diego, CA. Their navy career took them to Norfolk, VA. Their son, Shawn Randall, Jr. was born in Portsmouth, VA on July 7, 1999. They were later divorced.

Shawn returned to ND, to live with his family. He met Wendy Yankton and from this union a daughter, Carter Jill, was born on December 7, 2004.

He was a Life Member of Ft. Totten VFW Post #6547 where he had served as Post Commander 2009-2010. He served as President of the Student Government at Cankdeska Cikana Community College, CIHAN Board and was on the Pow-wow Committee from 2009-2010.

Shawn had gainful employment with Sioux Manufacturing Co. and Blattner Co. He was employed with the Spirit Lake Tribe in the Revenue Department for three years, then transferred to Spirit Lake Housing Authority from May of 2008 to present.

Shawn had a magnetic personality wherever he went he made lots of friends, he would always greet you with a smile, handshake and laugh with his great sense of humor. He was known for practical jokes, and in his younger years he used to break dance with his brother and cousins. He enjoyed working on cars with his grandpa and making car models. In high school, Shawn was active in basketball, was class president and always made the honor roll. Shawn really enjoyed fishing with his children, nieces and nephews. He was an awesome cook and enjoyed cooking for his sisters and brothers on their birthdays. He loved going to concerts with baby Shawn and his friends, his favorite baseball team was the New York Yankees where his favorite player was Derek Jeter. Shawn enjoyed playing darts and was active in dart leagues. Shawn played horseshoes and would place in his grandfather’s memorial tournament. In his spare time he would relax by listening to his hard rock music, eating Twizzlers with Shawn, Jr. and Carter.

Shawn is survived by his parents, Cheryl GoodIron and Robert Charboneau, both of Fort Totten; a son, Shawn Charboneau, Jr. of Fort Totten; a step-son, John Blake, Dallas, TX; two daughters, Sierra Rain Charboneau, Dallas, TX, and Carter Jill Charboneau, Fort Totten; two brothers, Sam Cloud II, Fort Totten and Robert Charboneau, Jr., Bismarck, ND; an adopted brother, Jason Thompson, Tokio, ND; six sisters JoNell (Desmond) Charboneau and Kristi (Kojak) Thompson, both of St. Michael, Chepa Cloud, Roselyn (Jerry) Lenoir, Bobbie Dunn, Angela Hook, and step-sister Amanda Luidtke, all of Fort Totten; his special friend, Kimberly Reynolds, New Town, ND; 9 aunts: Myra Pearson, Betty Smith, Candy Volk, Jeannie Charboneau and Stacie Charboneau, Connie Rainbow, Tammy Rainbow, Angel Rainbow, Sharon Rainbow, all of Fort Totten; 4 uncles, Terry Alex, Minneapolis, MN, Todd Belgarde, Sr., Julius Rainbow, Jr., and Bernard Rainbow, all of Fort Totten; his Godmother, Theresa Charboneau, Devils Lake; grandmothers, Mary Charboneau and Ardis Shaw, both of Fort Totten, Jean Veale, England; great-grandmothers, Lily Shaw and Hermenia McKay, both of Fort Totten; grandfathers, Delbert Cloud, Al Cloud, Vincent Shaw, and Andy Shaw, all of Fort Totten; also many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Sam Cloud, Frank Charboneau, Sr., Julius Rainbow, Sr., and Max Cook, Sr.; grandmothers, Elizabeth Morgan and Cecelia Cook; uncles, Stacey Littleghost, Frank Charboneau, Jr., Randall Noel, Victor Rainbow, and Scott Cook; aunts, Rosemary Charboneau and Karen Rainbow; and godfather, Charlie Charboneau.
