Shirley J. Kahl

Shirley J. Kahl, age 85, of Carrington, ND, died Sunday, June 19, 2011, at her home after a long battle with cancer, under the care of her family and Presentation Hospice of Carrington.

Shirley J. Schock was born on March 8, 1926, the daughter of John and Lillie (Schelske) Schock in rural Woodworth, ND. She attended rural schools until the family purchased a farm near Carrington so she could complete high school there. She graduated from high school in 1943, and began working for Gamble Store and later at Galehouse Drug. In 1946, the family moved to Portland Oregon, where she worked in the Kaiser shipyards as an electrician’s helper. In 1946, she returned to Carrington and resumed working at Galehouse Drug.

On October 5, 1947, Shirley was united in marriage to Wes Kahl at Federated Church in Carrington. They moved to Camp Rucker, Alabama in 1951, where she worked as a dental assistant at the Army post dental office. After Wes was discharged from the Army in 1952, they returned to Carrington and she began keeping books for 3 different firms. She also served as clerk for the Carrington Park District. In 1955, Shirley became a stay-at-home Mom and began raising her family.

She was an accomplished seamstress, knitter and quilter. Shirley made many of the clothes the family wore plus she did alterations for friends. She enjoyed her garden and loved to travel. While doing these things, Shirley also managed to be a leader for both the Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls.

Shirley will be remembered and deeply missed by her husband, Wes; two daughters, Evelyn (Michael Alcantar) Kahl, San Francisco, CA, and Rhonda (James) Burgard, Bismarck, ND; one son, Jeffrey, Grafton, ND; a brother, Charles (Betty) Schock, Carrington; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister.

The family asks that memorials be given to Carrington Cemetery Association.

Message: I want to express my heart-felt sympathy for the loss of Shirley--wife, mother and friend to many. I have so many fond memories of time at your house, Wes and Evie, that will always be a part of my life. My prayer is that you will know God's comfort right now and that very soon the good memories of Shirley will return to you all. When my mom passed it took awhile for me to think of her like she used to be-- well and able to communicate with us. You are in my heart and in my prayers. All my love, Doree

Message: Dear Wes, Rhonda and Evie,
My heart goes out to you during this difficult time. I always thought of Shirley as my "other" mom. I remember her making rose corsages from her rose garden and her experimenting in the kitchen! She fed me my first Cheese Souffle and I still have her recipe!
You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Steph
