Clayton Steele

Clayton Willis Steele, 90, of Carrington, ND died April 1, 2015, at the Sanford Hospital, Bismarck, ND.

 

Clayton was born February 21, 1925 in Kensal, ND, the son of Grover and Florence (Wescom) Steele.  He moved with his family to a farm at Edmunds, ND when he was 4.  Clayton grew up and attended school in Edmunds and Pingree, ND.  He entered the US Army in December 1945 at Ft. Snelling and served with the occupation army in Germany.  He was honorably discharged in January 1947.

 

Clayton married Clarice Bauge of Edmunds on July 4, 1948.  They farmed around Edmunds for two years before they moved to a farm near Carrington.  In 1955 they again moved to a farm near New Rockford, ND, that they later bought. They had two children, Carolyn and Curtis.  He owned and operated a school bus for the New Rockford School District for 8 years and along with a neighbor, built tractor cabs before they were available commercially.  In 1985, he was awarded the Carnegie Hero’s Award for attempting to rescue his neighbor who was overcome by toxic fumes while cleaning a well in his basement.  He retired from farming in 1987 but continued to help his son and neighboring farmers.  For 32 winters they made their home in Mesa, AZ where they made many friends.  They moved to Carrington in 2004.

 

Clayton was a member of Kvernes Lutheran Church, VFW, and American Legion.  He enjoyed fixing things, fishing, camping, traveling, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

He is survived by his wife, Clarice, daughter, Carolyn; 1 brother Robert; 1 daughter-in-law, Gail; 5 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 

 

He is preceded in death by his son, Curtis, 3 brothers, Floyd, Bernard, and Delbert, and 2 sisters, Darlene Oak and Margie Abernathy.
