Joy Sylling

Joy Sylling, age 87, of Sheyenne, ND, died Thursday, September 18, 2014, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND.

Joy LaVonne Olson was born on August 4, 1927, in Maddock, ND, the daughter of Thorwald and Betsy (Fossen) Olson. She grew up in Isabelle Township, located northwest of Maddock. She attended the Isabelle Township School. Joy later worked at the Farmers Union station at Maddock, and as waitress in the area.

Joy was united in marriage to Norris E. Sylling on September 29, 1945, at First Lutheran Church Parsonage in Sheyenne. They moved to West Antelope Valley Township near Oberon, ND, and farmed there until 1971. They moved to Sheyenne in that year and they owned and operated the Sheyenne Bar until 1988. Norris Sylling died December 7, 1992. Joy moved to Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in 2012.

Joy’s love of her life was music and family. She played the accordion and accompanied several different guitarists for local dances. She could play the piano by ear and had taught her girls to sing and perform. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Sheyenne. She had served as a Sunday School teacher and Sunday School Superintendent at  Antelope Valley Lutheran Church.

Joy is survived by one son Robert (Nancy) Sylling of Devils Lake, ND; four daughters Judy (Robert) Possen of Fargo, ND, Cherryl (Bradley) Bach of Riverton, WY, Peggy (Donald) Lindstrom of Kindred, ND, and Patty (Doug) Altringer of Eckelson, ND; 19 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and  8 great-great-granchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, all 16 of her siblings, a son-in-law, Frank Charboneau, Jr., and 1 great-granddaughter, Kenadi D. Dickens.
