Lilly Tangney

Lilly C. Tangney, age 98, of New Rockford, ND, passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2012, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford, ND.

Lilly Clara Rost was born March 27, 1913, to Emil A. and Elizabeth (Adam) Rost at the homestead in Bremen Township, Wells County, ND. She attended grade school in a rural school in Hamberg Township and graduated from Fessenden High School in 1931. During the Depression years she helped with work at home on the farm. In 1939, she graduated from VCJC in Valley City, receiving her 2 year teaching certificate. During her career in the teaching profession she spent sixteen years as a teacher and six years as Deputy County Superintendent of Schools, all in Wells County.

On June 24, 1950, Lilly was united in marriage to Lawrence J. Tangney at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Fessenden, ND. They purchased the Mike Lies farm in Bremen Township and shared the farm work with her mother and step-father, Anthony and Elizabeth Michalek until 1966 when he passed away. The Tangney’s then moved to the home farm and her mother moved to New Rockford, they continued farming until 1978, when they purchased a home in New Rockford. In 1996, they moved to the Heritage House. Lawrence passed away on November 29, 1997. Lilly moved into the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd on September 20, 2005.

Lilly was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. John’s Catholic Church, she was also very active in Bremen Homemakers for over 50 years, the American Legion Auxiliary, Golden Age Club and many other organizations. She enjoyed square dancing and traveling.

She is survived by one half-sister, Modesta (Michalek) Allmaras, Camano Island, WA, 6 nieces, 1 nephew,
2 great nieces, 6 great nephews, 2 great-great nieces, and 3 great-great nephews.

Lilly was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; her twin brother, Ernest Rost; sister, Sylvia Milde; parents, Emil Rost and Elizabeth Rost Michalek; step-father, Anthony Michalek; and a nephew, Anthony Allmaras.
