Edgar "Ed" Turner

Edgar William Turner, age 83, died peacefully on August 10, 2017, at Bethany on 42nd in Fargo, ND after complications of a fractured hip in June.

Ed was born November 25, 1933, in Carrington, ND, the son of Robert and Esther Turner.  After graduation from Kensal High School in 1952, he attended North Dakota State University where he played football. He served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict, being stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington. Upon his discharge, he entered Valley City State College, and again enjoyed playing football. It was told that Lois Headland chose him as the football player she wanted to meet from seeing his picture, and they were introduced by her roommate, Sandy Spitzer. They were soon wed on St. Patrick’s Day 1956. They moved to the farmstead 13 miles west of Kensal, where they established their home and raised their family of four. Edgar took pride in his farming operations which included wheat, barley, sunflowers, and also a cow/calf herd in his earlier years. He was also very proud of his yard, garden and his Christmas decorations. He was enthusiastic about the history of North Dakota and mostly just loved to visit with people.  He enjoyed the staff who became his good friends at Bethany.  While at Bethany he was active in worship and bible study.

For many years, Edgar was president of the Kensal Farmers Elevator Association. He was also a past commander of the John Florhaug American Legion Post in Kensal. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church serving on the church council. He was elected to the Kensal Public School Board. Edgar enjoyed traveling with his wife Lois, golfing or playing cards with friends, and was a square-dancer for a while. Ed was an avid Twins, NDSU, and UND fan, but especially loved watching or hearing about the activities of his grandchildren.

Edgar is survived by his sons, Brad (Francine) Turner, Leonard, ND, and Steve (Darlene) Turner, Fort Dodge, IA, and daughters, Julie (Tom) German, Pelican Lake, MN, and Lisa (Rob) Schanilec, Hickory, NC. He will be missed by 6 grandsons and 6 granddaughters. He was blessed with 10 great grandchildren.

Ed is also survived by his brother, Rich (JoAnn) Turner, San Diego, CA, sisters, Mary Ellen Kulla, Kensal, ND, and Ruth (Dale) Hamilton, Larkspur, CO, sisters-in-law, Marge Farley and Marlys Headland, along with a great circle of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, his parents, brother, Robert Turner, sister, Audrey Johnson, grandson, Brent Turner, and granddaughter, Anita Turner.

Message: I was in shock when I heard of Ed's passing.  Most recently, I worked with him at Bethany.  Not that I ever play favorites; I fall in love with all my resident, but with Ed it was different.  He and I shared so much time together. We made each other laugh, smile, I got to hear his stories, he heard mine; most importantly we became good friends. (like family).  I'll never forget when I told him that I accepted another position somewhere else; I assured him that I would visit: I wish I would have.  Love you Ed and I KNOW we will meet again.

Message: Our sincere sympathy to all the members of the family of Edgar Turner. We thank God for our memories of your Father. Steve and Darlene, we were especially happy that Edgar was able to live for a time here in Algona, and we saw him then.

I especially remember him and your mother as being the fine Christian people they were, faithful to their Savior, dedicated in their service to Christ as members of St. Paul's Lutheran.

I remember One event especially - when they visited with me about what would be an appropriate gift to give Steve on his ordination. We were excited when your first Call took you to the Marcus-Quimby parish we had served some years before.

At the death of Lazarus, Jesus comforted His friend Martha with these words: "I am the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" Her answer and our answer to that question are the difference between whether we are comforted by Jesus' words. Ed, I am confident, said with Martha, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God." I am confident that is also your comfort at this time.

May God bless and keep all of you in His care.

Our love, In Christ, Rev. Henry and Evelyn Friedrich.
