Verna Olson

Verna Joyce Olson, age 74, of New Rockford, ND, died Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, ND.

She was born on the family farm in Eddy County, ND, on October 8, 1935, the daughter of Arthur and Zada (Sproat) Jordan.  Verna was the first of nine children.  She attended school at Columbia and Sheyenne.

Verna married Eugene Weisenburger on November 20, 1953, in New Rockford, ND, to this union four children were born and raised on the farm in Brantford, ND.  She was a homemaker and helped with the farm animals and the farming until their divorce in 1967, when she moved to Minot, ND.  In Minot, Verna met Stan Olson, they were married in 1969 . Together they had four children and made their homes in North Dakota, Minnesota and Montana.  While living in Richey, MT, she helped her mom, Zada Torgrimson, with her café, the Cozy Kitchen Café.  During her numerous years there, they became known for their delicious home cooked meals and their homemade baked goods.  After the café was sold, she cooked for the Senior Citizens until she moved back to New Rockford in 1994.  After various café jobs, she went to work full-time as a CNA for Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd.  She put in many hours caring for the residents she truly loved until the time of her death.

Verna spent her spare time working crossword puzzles, looking through her vast collection of cookbooks and spending a few dollars at the Spirit Lake Casino, ND.

She will always be remembered for her hard work, homemade cooking, and the love that she gave her family, friends and residents.

Verna is survived by her eight children; Vicki (Tim) Roemmich, Holdrege, NE, Eddie Weisenburger, New Rockford, ND, Nancy (Dick) Huber, Billings, MT, Karla (James) Dockter, New Rockford, ND, Russell (Tommi) Weisenburger, Oklahome City, OK, Mary (Wes) Vine, Vida, MT, Denise Drew and Grant Olson of Richey, MT, three sisters; Lois (Leonard) Jacobsen, New Rockford, ND, Sandy (Ron) Melhoff, Minot, ND, Carolyn (Casper) Feist, Grand Forks, ND, one brother Artie (Annette) Jordan, Howard Lake, MN, thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren whom she truly loved.

She was preceded in death by her mother; Zada Torgrimson, her father; Arthur Jordan, three brothers; Russell, Glenn and Bert, and one sister, Shirley Jordan who died at birth.

She will be dearly missed by everyone who loved and knew her.
