Rev. Donald Waggoner

Rev. Donald Waggoner, age 98, of Carrington, ND, died Monday, October 26, 2015, at Golden Acres Manor in Carrington.

Donald Harry Waggoner was born on March 2, 1917, in Baitalpur, Central Province, India.  Don’s parents, Harry and Helen (Porter) Waggoner, were missionaries to the lepers in India.  Don received his early education in India, and then was sent back to the United States at the age of 15, where he completed a school for children of missionaries in Columbia, SC.  Don attended, and graduated from Central Bible College, Springfield, MO, in May of 1939, and started his Pastoral Ministry.

Coming alongside him in his ministry was Dorothy Torgerson of Parshall, ND.  Rev. Don and Dorothy were married at Parshall on June 29, 1940.  They pastored churches in Ohio, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Saskatchewan (Canada), and New Town, ND.  Don and Dorothy moved to Carrington in 1966, where he became the Administrator of Golden Acres Manor Nursing Home.  He became the Founding Pastor of Bethel Chapel (Bethel Assembly of God) at Carrington in 1975.  Don and Dorothy retired in 1980.  Following retirement, they spent winters in Arizona while living in Carrington, and then moved to Springfield, MO.  Dorothy died November 23, 2008.  Don later returned to Carrington where he resided at Golden Acres Manor until his death.

Don was a talented singer and musician, playing the trombone and piano.  He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.  He also enjoyed painting nature scenes, which often included the wildlife he liked to hunt.

He will be greatly missed by his 3 surviving children, Ron (Cheryl) Waggoner, Springfield, Carol (Allan) Metzger, Carrington, Doree (Hal) Donaldson, Springfield; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife Dorothy; a daughter and son-in-law Helen and  Roger Sorbo; and eight siblings.

God called Don home Monday morning and said, “Well done, good and faithful servant”.

The family suggests memorials to “Convoy of Hope, 330 South Patterson Ave., Springfield, MO 65802” or “Golden Acres Foundation, 1 East Main St., Carrington, ND 58421”.

Message: I received the news that Rev. Donald Waggoner transitioned this earthly life to Eternal Glory. My sincere prayers and condolences go out to all his family.

Don impacted my life when I was a youngster growing up in New Town, ND, back in the 1960's. Don, with his wife Dorothy, pastored the Gospel Tabernacle Church where my family attended. I recall Don coming to the hospital to pray for me when I was very ill as a young boy. Don had a heart for service to others during his long ministry.

Over the years, I always enjoyed hearing Don share some of his hunting and fishing stories and relate his experiences as an outdoorsman. I also enjoyed hearing him and Dorothy share in music with their instruments and voices.

I was privileged to see Don at the Golden Acres Manor on Friday, the 9th of October - just 17 days before his Homegoing. What a precious time of fellowship we shared together. He hummed a hymn and I read a few Scriptures with him in his room. I sensed he was strong in spirit and ready to go home to be with His Precious Savior and loved ones. God's presence was very real in that room, and His peace and love surrounded Don and me.

Don will be missed, but I look forward to a future day of reunion with him and all my loved ones in Christ.

May the God of all comfort (2 Cor. 1:3) be your strength, solace, and peace as you look forward to that glorious and joyous day when you are reunited with all your loved ones, included Don, in Heaven. God bless you all!

Message: We share your loss with prayers of comfort.  Don was a favorite cousin.  We have many fond memories of him and Dorothy. Right after they were married they lived in a small house behind our home while they pastored in Weathersfield Ohio.  Your whole family are very special.  I know Don will be missed as is Dorothy. please know you are loved.  I am half Waggoner as my mother was a sister to Harry. We look forward to the trumpet sound when all will come forth in new bodies and we will meet in the air.  Blessings to all of you with Peace from our Lord.
