Delbert "Bud" Wescom

Delbert “Bud” Wescom, age 85, of Carrington, ND, died Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Carrington Health Center, Carrington.

Delbert Leroy Wescom was born on April 12, 1927, the son of Harry and Mabel Wescom at their home one mile west of Pingree, ND. He attended rural school in Pipestem Valley Township in Stutsman County.

In April, 1945, Bud married Betty Niess at Jamestown. They had three children, James, Carol and Beverly. Bud was inducted into the US Army in June, 1945. He went to basic training in Tyler, TX, and spent Christmas of 1945, in Berlin, Germany, serving with the occupational troops and also in the Military Police. During his time overseas, he got to visit Switzerland, which was a country he always wanted to see. Bud was Honorably Discharged in 1947. Returning to ND, he worked on the medical ward of the State Hospital in Jamestown for 2 years and then went to farming but continued to work at the hospital in the winter months. He also drove truck for Clark Truckline in Carrington and school bus in Pingree for several years. Betty passed away in 1955.

In 1956, Bud married Beulah Lutz and together they raised the children and also four foster children, Darlene, Bonnie, Tina and Nyles Newling. Beulah died on September 20, 1991.

On July 12, 1993, Bud was united in marriage to Lois Hjelseth. They made their home in Carrington and spent several winters in Florence, AZ. Bud was a member of Congregational Church in Pingree, a member of VFW, attended Trinity Lutheran Church, and Senior Citizen Center all in Carrington.  He loved spending time with his family, and also enjoyed walking and playing pinochle.

Bud is survived by his wife, Lois; two daughters, Carol (Lloyd) Windjue, Jamestown, and Beverly (Kenneth) Reutter, Pingree; five grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; four foster children, Darlene (Steve) Wahl and Bonnie (Randi) Bredahl, both of Jamestown, Tina Berge, Williston, ND, and Nyles Newling, Seattle, WA; four step children, Joy (Rod) Cellmer, Plainville, KS, Lynn Hjelseth, Carrington, Jeffrey (Jean) Hjelseth, Sandy, UT, and Joel (Debbie) Hjelseth, Greensburg, PA; twelve step-grandchildren and eighteen step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Harriet Wahl, Jamestown and Mary Hiene, Le Mars, IA; one brother, Richard Wescom, Jamestown; and a host of good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Betty and Beulah; one son, James; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Donna Doreen Wescom.
