Carol Reimers

Carol Reimers, age 89, of Carrington, ND, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at her home.

Carol Fortney was born on March 25, 1920, the daughter of Carl John and Cora Marie (Hagelie) Fortney at Jamestown, ND. She lived with her parents on their farm at Bowdon, ND, until she graduated from Bowdon High School and went to Concordia College. After her first year of college, she transferred to NDSU, where she earned a degree in Home Economics in 1942.

After graduating from college, Carol moved to Carrington, where she taught high school Home Economics until she married Robert (Bob) Frederick Reimers on June 24, 1945. Carol and Bob built a small house southeast of Carrington and started farming near Melville. Occasionally, Carol substituted as a teacher in Melville Grade School for a few years. Carol used her skills in home economics to create a wonderful home life for her husband and two children, Steve and Ann. She was a devoted wife and mother, neither her husband nor her children could have imagined a better wife or mom. As all farmwives at the time, Carol worked very hard cooking, not only for her family, but extra farm helpers every day. She was a great cook, seamstress, and gardener. She always had a large vegetable garden, which provided fresh food in the summer and preserved homegrown food in the winter. The pantry was always stocked with homemade wild chokecherry and plum jelly. She loved her flower gardens, which were always picture-perfect.

Carol was active in several civic organizations in Carrington and in her local rural community, as well as being a faithful member of the Federated Church. She was a kind and generous person, always thinking of others first, always thinking about what she could do to make someone happy. Her friends and others needing a loving gesture were frequently blessed with fresh flowers or homemade baked or canned goods.

Bob started a political career early in their marriage, which led to a long service in the ND House of Representatives. Carol was always by his side, totally supportive and devoted. In the 1960’s, they purchased land in Texas and began farming there as well as in ND. After spending winters in Beeville, TX for several years, they built a home in Rockport, a town nearby on the Texas coast in 1978. Thereafter, they spent about two-thirds of the year in Rockport in the home and town they loved, making many new friends and having a lot of fun, including many mini-cruises on their beloved “Snowbird. The remainder of the year, the farming season, was spent at their condominium in Carrington to which they moved when their daughter, Ann and husband, Ernie moved to the farm.

The Carrington condominium was a daily stopping point for grandchildren, where Carol always welcomed them with open arms and at least two kinds of fresh cookies. The home in Rockport became a destination for family vacations in the summer and at Christmas, creating endless happy memories for all, especially the grandchildren. There were always at least five kinds of fresh cookies there; mentioning a cookie variety that wasn’t in the offerings resulted in a trip to the grocery store by Carol and a baking spree to fix the void.

Carol is survived by her daughter, Ann Reimers (Ernie) Hoffert; her son, Stephen (Jeanne) Reimers; six granddaughters, Rosie Hoffert, Chelsea Hoffert, Lissie Hoffert, Jenna Hoffert, Nicole (Mark) Doering, and Christy (David) Keyes; and a great-grandson, Carter Magnum.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert F. Reimers, who died on September 3, 2003; and a brother, Douglas Fortney.
