Cleone Phyllis Stein was born in Wimbledon, ND, on August 10, 1915, the daughter of Arthur and Bertha (Lunde) Stein, where she was baptized, confirmed and attended school. Cleone graduated from Valley City State University with an elementary certificate in 1935 and a B.S degree in 1963. She taught elementary, history and music classes in Bordulac, Lakota, McHenry, and Glenfield-Sutton for 22 years.

Cleone married Edmund L. Pewe on December 20, 1941, in Valley City, ND, and moved to the Pewe family farm near McHenry that has been farmed by the Pewe family since the early 1900’s.

She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in McHenry and served as organist for 30 years, was choir director and held many church offices. Cleone served on the Foster County Council On Aging and was a director on the six county South Central Adult Services Council for meals program. She and her husband were charter members of the McHenry Senior Citizen’s organization. Cleone also taught piano lessons for 30 years.

Cleone loved flowers, enjoyed gardening and raising vegetables. Her favorite pastime was handwork especially Norwegian hardanger, of which she made numerous beautiful pieces, including two sets of Altar and Pulpit cloths for Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

In 1997, Edmund and Cleone moved to Ashley to be closer to their daughter and family. They became Associate members of Zion Lutheran Church. Edmund and Cleone both entered the Ashley Nursing Home in November of 2007.

Cleone is survived by her husband of 67 years, Edmund; one daughter, Karen (Dallas) Lang, Ashley, ND; two grandchildren, Tricia R. Lang, Bismarck, ND, and Dr. Darin W. Lang and his fiancée, Katrina Turman, both of Fargo, ND; two sisters-in-law, Irene Johnson, Carrington, ND, and Marie Anderson, Jamestown, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
