Ernest Gjerdevig

Ernest Gjerdevig, age 89, of Carrington, ND, died Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at Carrington Health Center, Carrington, ND.

Ernest “Ernie” Gjerdevig was born on August 9, 1920 at Alsen, ND, the son of Lars and Helena (Walde) Gjerdevig. He grew up in the Alsen community attending grade and high school.  Ernie farmed with his parents until 1944, when he enlisted in the US Navy. While in the Navy, he was a member of the Navy Blue Jackets choir. Ernie served on the US Bunker Hill for two years and received an honorable discharge in 1946.

Ernie was united in marriage to Rose Amoth on June 2, 1948, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in rural Langdon, ND. He attended Valley City State college, where he obtained a Bachelors of Science degree. He was Superintendent and taught in various schools in ND, ending his teaching career in Carrington, and Bisbee Egeland. Ernie enjoyed coaching the basketball and football teams. In the spring of 1959, he sold insurance and managed the local credit union. He did crop, hail, and multi peril insurance adjusting until his retirement in 2002. After retiring, Ernie spent his time helping his wife at the Rose Garden Floral and raising a large garden, giving most of the produce away. During this time, he started a large raspberry patch and raising grapes, which were his pride and joy.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 50 years. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and American Legion all of Carrington. He was a Veteran’s Service Officer for one year.

Ernest is survived by his wife, Rose; three daughters, Faye (Kenneth) Schaubert, Omaha, NE, Linda Lee and Roxanne Fougner, both of Fargo, ND; two sons, Leslie, Temecula, CA, and David, Minneapolis, MN; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ovina Isaac, Clearwater, FL, and Gladys Graber, Newton, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Lenford.
