Lucille "Lu" Berg

Lucille “Lu” Berg, age 95, of New Rockford, ND, died Friday, August 12, 2011, at Golden Acres Manor, Carrington,

Lucille Selma Walstad, known as Lu, was born October 7, 1915, on a homestead near Miles City, Montana.  She was the oldest child of Nathan and Manda (Olsen) Walstad.  She grew up in rural Milton, ND, and graduated from Milton High School in 1934.  Lu was united in marriage to Howard E. Berg on April 14, 1937.  They lived in Hoople, ND, for a few years, and then moved to Cavalier where they raised their 4 children.  In November of 1965, the family moved to Panorama City, California.  Lu worked at several banks there, and also at RCA.  In the fall of 1976, they purchased land in Sequim, WA, and started having a house built.  Before they could move, Howard got sick and died in May of 1977, in California.  Lu moved to Washington and had the house finished.  She spent her years there sewing, quilting, bowling and playing cards.  In November of 2000, Lu moved to an apartment in New Rockford.  She continued her quilting, and she loved to cook and bake.  She was an avid reader, and after she could no longer see, she listened to many, many talking books.  She lived by herself even after she was totally blind until she entered Golden Acres Manor in February 2011.  While there, Lu loved listening to high school sports, and never missed a Twins game even though she was not a Twins fan!

She is survived by two sons, Gary (Amy) of Detroit Lakes, MN, and Ray, Reno, NV; one daughter Caryl (Larry) Schagunn, New Rockford; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Berg, Tiffin, OH; 9 grandchildren:  Duane Berg, Chicago, IL, Bill Berg and Teresa (Bob) Scheel, both of Dilworth, MN, Dana (Tracy) Schagunn, Dickinson,  Dennis Schagunn, Ellendale,  Cara (Lyle)  Schagunn-Lere, Jamestown,  Katie (Sean) Christie, Minot, Kathy Blank, Stanwood, WA,  Steven Berg, Reno, NV; 2 step-grandchildren, Carrie (Troy) Vetter and Brian Bertsch, both Fargo; 10 great-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren;  3 sisters Vernice Schulz, Wyoming, Eunice Carlson, Virginia, and Alda Pearson, California.

Lu was preceded in death by her husband Howard, a son Duane, a daughter-in-law, Gloria Berg, her parents, 3 brothers, and 3 sisters.
