Leonard Otto Kuehn was born on September 2, 1918, the son of William and Sophia (Vollmars) Kuehn, in their farm home, rural Carrington, ND. He attended grade school in Wyard Township, northwest of Carrington. After graduating from the 8th grade, he began farming with his parents.

Leonard was a charter member of the newly organized Trinity Lutheran Church. As a teenager, he drove a team of horses into Carrington to help prepare the site for building the church on Main Street. In 1955, Leonard married Elsie Aleshire. They lived on the home farm for a time, then moved to a farm south west of Carrington, and eventually buying a farm near Sykeston, ND. They later divorced. In the early 1980’s, Leonard moved to Medina, ND, working seasonal jobs in that area. He lived there with his companion dogs, until he was injured in an accident.
