Leonard Kuehn

Leonard Otto Kuehn was born on September 2, 1918, the son of William and Sophia (Vollmars) Kuehn, in their farm home, rural Carrington, ND. He attended grade school in Wyard Township, northwest of Carrington. After graduating from the 8th grade, he began farming with his parents.

Leonard was a charter member of the newly organized Trinity Lutheran Church. As a teenager, he drove a team of horses into Carrington to help prepare the site for building the church on Main Street. While the nation was at war, Leonard moved to Idaho, where he worked in a mine. Later, he moved to Portland, OR, and worked in a ship yard building ships for the Navy. Following the war, he returned to the family farm, and began farming with his father, and later rented land for himself.

In 1955, Leonard married Elsie Aleshire. They lived on the home farm for a time, then moved to a farm south west of Carrington, and eventually buying a farm near Sykeston, ND. They later divorced. In the early 1980’s, Leonard moved to Medina, ND, working seasonal jobs in that area. He lived there with his companion dogs, until he was injured in an accident. Leonard moved into Golden Acres Manor on his 91st birthday.

Leonard is survived by two sisters, Janice Heringer and Elaine Gussiaas, both of Carrington, ND; stepson, Virgil Aleshire and stepdaughter, Lana Betts, both of MN; step grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and many grand nieces and nephews.
