Josh Cabler was so many things to so many people – a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, cousin, uncle, nephew, and friend.

Joshua James Cabler was born on December 13th, 1984 to Leslie Jr & Joyce (Stenvold) Cabler in Harvey, ND. He grew up and attended elementary school in Fessenden until 5th grade when their family moved to Carrington, where he finished elementary and high school. After graduation, he went on to earn an Associate’s Degree as a lineman from Bismarck State College. Josh began his career working for Aerial Contractors for about four years and then joined Northern Plains Electric in Carrington in 2006 where he grew within the company, from Lineman to his most recent role as Operations Manager.

On July 11th, 2009, Josh entered into what would become the craziest and most fulfilling adventure he could have ever dreamed of when he married Kristin Gussiaas. Josh worked tirelessly for years, building Kristin’s dreams into reality, and making her dreams their dreams. They lived in rural Carrington, and later built their dream home overlooking Rusten’s slough near Grace City, ND. Josh and Kristin started their animal adventure with a Golden Retriever named Sayde and continued growing their family, four legs at a time to most recently include 4 horses, 3 dogs, 2 rabbits, and lots of cats, along with their developing Up North Mini Cattle Company, a growing herd of 15 Scottish Highlands and 8 Beef Cows.

Josh’s greatest treasure was being a father to their three children: Kaydri (13), Brexyn (10), and Rhyatt (5). He was the best dad, guiding them through 4H adventures and livestock showing at the Foster County Fair and North Dakota State Fair, and he never missed a chance to watch them at all of their sporting events and youth activities. Josh cherished every moment of the life he and Kristin were building together.

Josh currently served as Truck Captain and Training Officer on the Carrington Volunteer Fire Department, a Trustee of the Trinity Lutheran Church Council, and a member of the Foster County Fair Board. In his free time, he enjoyed being with family and friends, spending time outdoors at the lake with his family, golfing, snowmobiling, and all of the Ranchman responsibilities at home that he so willingly dedicated countless hours to (fixing fence endlessly!).

Josh passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on July 20th, 2025 in Carrington at the age of 40. He is survived by his wife, Kristin; his children, Kaydri, Brexyn, and Rhyatt; his parents, Les & Joyce Cabler; his sister, Tina (Myron) Jans; and his brother, Levi (Kristy) Cabler. He is further survived by his in-laws, Don & Janice Gussiaas, Darcy & Marty Schenck, Melissa & Jesse Van Nevel, and Greg & Monica Gussiaas; many nieces and nephews, and countless friends and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Les Cabler, Sr. and infant nephew, Axyl James Jans.

Josh is like a boat you watch going across an endless sea; too soon out of sight, but we know he will always be there.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to the Carrington Youth Baseball or Basketball programs or the Carrington Volunteer Fire Department.

Josh’s Visitation will be Wednesday, July 23, 2025, from 1:00-4:00PM at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington and will continue from 5:30-6:30PM followed by a Prayer Service at 6:30PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington.

A Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 25, 2025, at 11:00AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington.

His Burial will be at the Carrington Cemetery.
