Viola A. Delorme
“Cookie”
Viola A. Delorme (Cookie) age 75 of St. Michael, ND passed peacefully away on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.
Viola A. Cavanaugh was born on May 15, 1950, in Ft. Totten, ND to Michael (Brownie) and Irene (Jetty) Cavanaugh. She was raised in St. Michael, ND, where she lived a full and meaningful life alongside her beloved husband of 53 years, Leo. Together they raised four sons Leo Jr., Landon, Larren and Larris. Later, they raised their first little girl, their grand-daughter Hailey, building a family grounded in love, faith, and devotion. Cookie and Leo established their home in rural St. Michael. Cookie graduated from Warwick High School in 1969 and was a proud graduate of UND, where she earned her degree in Elementary Ed. She began her teaching career at St. Michael Tribal School until it closed and later became employed at Four Winds School. Cookie dedicated 38 years to teaching, touching countless young lives with patience, kindness, and a genuine love for learning, until her health required her to retire.
Cookie was a devoted Catholic and remained faithful in praying the rosary throughout her life. Her faith was a constant source of strength and comfort. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael. In 1999 she was able to take a special trip to Medjugorje with her mother, sister Barbara, friend Bernadine Solway, and niece Gail Martinson – a journey that deepened her devotion and brought her great peace. In her quieter moments, Cookie found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved playing slot machines, tending her flower gardens, canning, visiting with family and friends, painting her nails, and savoring her morning coffee at the table while looking out the window watching the blue jays and hummingbirds, a peaceful ritual she truly loved. Her laughter, love, and generosity will forever remain in the hearts of those who know her.
She is survived by her husband, Leo Delorme Sr.; her children, Leo Jr. (Jenni) of Grand Forks, ND, Landon (Mandy) of Belcourt, ND, Larren and Larris both of St. Michael, ND; adopted son, Joseph Thumb; siblings: Michael, Clifford, and Bruno E. Cavanaugh, Diane (Butch) Lohnes, Loretta (Glenn) Delorme, Cheryl (Al) Laducer, and Judith (Dave) LaRocque; grandchildren: Leandra, Branson, Brayden, Stephon, Landon Jr, Leeallen, Jayallen, Hailey (Mathew), Kyren, Kaden, Rangler, Briar, Larris (LJ). Latrell; great-grandchildren: C`etan, Braxton, Jaziah and Mattea, and several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Proceeded in death by her parents, Michael and Irene Cavanaugh; granddaughter, Angel Delorme; sister, Maxine Foss and Barbara Walking Eagle; brothers, Bruno F. Cavanaugh and Marvin Anderson and many loving in-laws.
Special thank you to all caretakers and for all that prayed for her.
