Betty Georgeson

Betty Georgeson, age 86, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at CHI St. Alexius Health in Carrington, ND, surrounded by family.

Betty Jane Nyhusmoen was born on September 16, 1939, to Sigurd and Blenda (Simonson) Nyhusmoen in rural Sheyenne, ND. She attended country school before graduating from Sheyenne Public School in 1957. Betty earned her first teaching degree from Minot State that same year and soon began what would become a lifelong calling.

Her early years of teaching took her across North Dakota, to Alaska and even halfway around the world. One of the highlights of her single life was serving with the Lutheran Mission in Papua New Guinea, where from 1967 to 1969 she taught children at the Kabak Station. She often spoke of that experience as one of her life’s greatest adventures!

Her teaching travels continued — from summers abroad in Germany and Norway, to classrooms in Beach, Ketchikan and Wolf Point — yet Betty’s heart was always with her students. She returned to North Dakota in 1969 to teach in Jamestown before marrying Gary Georgeson on October 24, 1970, at First Lutheran Church in Sheyenne. Together they raised three children — Troy, Tara and Kerstin — while making their home on a farm near New Rockford and later west of Sheyenne. Betty poured her love into family life, encouraging her daughters in their music and surrounding her children with the same curiosity and joy for learning she brought to every classroom.

Over the course of her career, Betty taught countless students in both small towns and larger schools. She was a reading specialist at Sheyenne Public School from 1989 until its closing and also taught kindergarten in Oberon. Her colleagues and students remember her as a teacher who touched lives with patience, creativity and a belief that every child could learn. She left a lasting impact not just in the classroom, but in the hearts of the children and families she served.

After retiring, Betty found joy in tending her yard and gardens, filling her days with flowers, books and friendships. Known for her quick wit, positive outlook and love of knowledge, she remained curious and engaged in the world around her. The Sheyenne community became her family and she cherished the lifelong friends she made there.

Most of all, she treasured time with her children and grandchildren, who knew her as a steady presence, a source of encouragement and a woman whose love ran deep.

Betty is survived by her son, Troy of New Rockford/Drayton, ND; daughters, Kerstin (Jamie) Allmaras of New Rockford and Tara Georgeson of Newfolden, MN; grandchildren, Kaia (Jake) Moen, Gretchen Georgeson, Anya Georgeson, Rachel Georgeson, Jack Georgeson, Katie Allmaras, Thomas Allmaras; step great-grandsons, Zaiden and Abel Moen; sister, Janice Nielsen; sister-in-law, LouAnn Nyhusmoen; brother-in-law, Quentin Georgeson; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Gary; her parents; brother, Arnold Nyhusmoen; brothers-in-law, Eugene Nielsen, Aldon (Edith) Georgeson, and Dean (Fern) Georgeson; sisters-in-law, Maxine Michaels, Neola (Charles) Richter, and Delores Georgeson.

Betty’s Visitation will be held Sunday, September 21, 2025 from 5:00PM – 7:00PM followed by a Prayer Service at 7:00PM at First Lutheran Church, New Rockford, ND.

Her Funeral Service will be held Monday, September 22, 2025 at 10:30AM at First Lutheran Church, New Rockford, ND.

A Burial will be at Grandfield Lutheran Cemetery, Sheyenne, ND.

  6. So sorry to hear the news about Betty, and my condolences to the Georgeson and Nyhusmoen families. As adventurers and teachers overseas, she and Janice were my inspirations while growing up, and Betty even matched me with a penpal from New Guinea while teaching there. I always enjoyed it when she came to visit Grandma Agnes, always so positive and warm, and of course, together they had such great fun! Her memory is a blessing to us all.
