Terrence Herman
Terrence Lee Herman Sr. began his journey to the Spirit World on February 6, 2026. Born on December 21, 1959, in Devils Lake, North Dakota, Terry was the son of Guy “Casper” Demarrias and Estell Herman Hennager.
Terry shared nearly 44 years of love and togetherness with his wife, Catalina, whom he often called his soulmate. Together they built a life rooted in devotion, resilience, and deep love for family. From their marriage came three sons, and Terry lovingly raised Catalina’s three sons from a previous marriage as his own. The youngest, Waylon, was just graduating from Head Start. He guided his boys toward basketball, and when they made it to State, he was a proud and joyful father.
Terry and Catalina also adopted their daughter, Christine Marie Herman, bringing her home from the hospital and into their hearts. She carries their bloodline and was his “Princess” and forever “Daddy’s little girl.” After raising all boys, having a daughter brought him special joy. He spoiled her dearly and took pride in the strong, resilient woman she became. Terry also had two sons, T.J. and Tony (deceased), from a previous marriage. Though they lived out of state, he was kept updated on their wellbeing by his Aunt Shirley and often spoke of wishing he could have met his grandchildren.
He was a man of many talents. Basketball was his first love, but as he grew older, he became known for his skill in carpentry. He was affectionately called the “deck guy,” known for his precision, craftsmanship, and ability to calculate exactly what a project required. In the 1990s, he proudly operated “The Herman Crew.” He also enjoyed listening to oldies but goodies, tinkering with his truck, fixing things around the house, visiting with friends, playing the machines at the Casino, and most of all, sharing stories of “back in the day” with his grandchildren.
Terry had a teasing spirit and a big heart. He wanted his children to grow into good fathers and mothers and often reminded them to learn from his mistakes. He was deeply loved by his grandchildren — too numerous to list — and to many others who called him “Grandpa,” whether by blood or by bond. He was proud to be a great-grandfather and had plans to welcome the newest addition, plans that Catalina will lovingly carry forward.
Terry spent much of his life on the Spirit Lake Reservation. Though enrolled elsewhere, he always said he wished to be enrolled here. He loved this community and the people in it. Though he carried struggles not always visible, Terry loved his family fiercely. His pride, humor, and devotion live on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
