Carter Kleinsasser

Carter Kleinsasser, 82, of rural Carrington, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025. Born on January 28, 1943, on the family farm in Chaseley to John C. and Anna P. (Wollman), Carter lived a life devoted to hard work, the land, his family, and being a loyal friend to many.

Life on the farm taught Carter never to be afraid of hard work. His work ethic served him well throughout his life. He would share stories about his early jobs off the farm, including stints building the interstate in Montana, custom combining in the South, and building the runway at Stapleton Airport in Denver. He joined the US Army in 1964 and served as a military police officer. He returned to the family farm after his father’s passing and has been a farmer ever since.

In 1969, he married KathE (Porter), and in 1974, they bought the farmstead 13 miles southwest of Carrington, where they raised small grains, sunflowers, beef cattle, and their children, Sheri and Jimmy. Through the good times and bad, no rain and too much rain, and with a lot of luck and the grace of God, the farm persevered.

Carter taught his family how to work hard, stay humble, and take pride in what they do. He poured his heart into family and the farm, both of which are better because of him. He was a proud dad, supporting his kids in all they did and along the way becoming a loyal fan of the Carrington Cardinals, UND Fighting Sioux, and Minnesota Vikings.

Carter’s grandchildren gave him his most prized title, Papa. Whether it was riding in the Gator, going fishing, gopher hunting, or watching every sporting event, play, or recital, his grandchildren always felt his love, pride, and support.

Beyond being a farmer, husband, father, and Papa, Carter was a great friend. He was a neighbor always willing to help someone in need. He had a quick wit and could strike up a conversation with anyone, making them feel like an old friend. Since retiring in 2011, he has been a regular attendee of coffee on Saturday mornings with his Hawksnest Township friends and on weekday afternoons in Carrington with his buddies, whom he affectionately called “The Table of Knowledge.”

Carter is survived by his wife KathE of 56 years, children Sheri (Stuart) Stockmoe and Jimmy (Christa) Kleinsasser, grandchildren Seely and Shya Stockmoe, Carter and Cayden Kleinsasser, sisters Grace Nutz, Caryl Kleinsasser, brothers Allen Kleinsasser, Russel (Janice) Kleinsasser, brother in-law Dennis (Kathy) Porter, as well as many loved nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Don Nutz, and sister-in-law Anita Kleinsasser.

A Celebration of Life will be held on December 19, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Carrington, ND, with Visitation an hour prior. The service will be streamed on YouTube @calvarybaptistcarrington.

In lieu of flowers and memorials, the family requests you donate to an organization you are passionate about.

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of Carter. Yet we know he is with our Lord. May you all have peace and comfort in knowing that. Kathy I often think of when we were at a relative’s funeral and we had our youngest grandson with us. You were so kind to a little guy. He’s now a lawyer in Bismarck.
We just ask for comfort to you and your extended family.

  20. KathE, Jim, Sheri and families we are so sorry to hear of Carter’s passing! We were just with all of you in Las Vegas a week ago at Jim and Greg’s induction.
Looking at how successful and hardworking Jim and Sheri are in school, sports and life is a testament to the work ethic you and Carter instilled in them.
Your kindness when you and Carter reached out to us when our son was drafted into the NFL is something we will always cherish!

  21. KathE, This one hurts. The two of you were especially kind to Rosemary and I at church and dinner after. As newcomers it is sometimes difficult to be accepted yet this was never a problem with the both of you. Carter and his cronies would see me often at the Prairie Inn and he never missed an opportunity to greet me. As we age smiling becomes something we do less and less and he brought one to my face every time.

  57. KathE and family. You and Carter were such special customers. When I think of Carter I think of the “Yellow Bird”. Only we knew how special that was but it always brought a smile to my face and a memory I’ll never forget. Also our 1st grandson was named Carter and I shared that with him and he would always ask about him. When I told him Carter and his Dad were huge Jimmy K. Vikings fans the next time he seen me he gave me autographed photos to give to our grandson and dad. That shows how special he was to every little detail. Always friendly and always made you feel like a best friend. He will truly be missed by everyone. Our deepest sympathies to all the families. Roger and Linda Lauckner
